Glad this thread surfaced it's a good read. Whilst I have all US stock currently I've recently within the last week started browsing some of the UK market models. After all I run what I want so why not. Haven't fixed on anything yet, need to do some similar research here on what's good and what's not good quality, and then of course there's the coupler challenge again. I do also quite fancy one of the new Kato Unitrams.

I'll have to post some pictures when I take the plunge.

She's a beauty. Diesel hydraulic or diesel mechanical?

I know what you mean. I have a soft spot for A3 and A4 Pacifics but I haven't overcome my reservations about Graham Farish (Bachmann) models and I think they discontinued their A3. If you decide to run Japanese; Kato, Tomix, and MicroAce are all excellent runners.

Well, was at a model train show and couldn't help myself.:tb-embarrassed:
I am now a proud owner of a "foreign" locomotive: KATO GM EMD JT42CWR (a.k.a. Class 66).

Give us a clue man :) Who posted what date and time? The Japanese stuff will often have Kato 11-702 couplers. The European stuff is, in my experience, not worth swapping out the Rapidos as some stuff has Rapidos that can't be easily swapped ie: my Kato Tauruses.

what ever that part number you just gave (11-702) i would like to see what the couplers look like up close and also what the close coupling abilities they provide

I checked it out the prototype the internet and it looks like a beauty. Post a picture of your model when you get a chance.

The system won't let me change the title of the thread to "International." Doh!

KATO GM EMD JT42CWR (CLASS 66)

Here it is, the KATO GM EMD JT42CWR (CLASS 66), and one for size caparison with an KATO GE AC4400CW. (my camera doesn't have a good macro function).
Its paint scheme is from Opel/GM Leasing and the loco is used by Railion Netherlands for border crossing freight.

Have Kato made the class 66 to British 1:148 N scale or 1:160 for the European market? My guess looking at the photo would be 1:160.

Kato made it to 1:160 scale for the European market.

Here is a great 1:1 scale picture for size comparison (Class 66 and Dash 9):

I think there are two models of the class 66 on the market: Kato 1:160 for continental Europe, and Graham Farish (or Dapol, don't know) in 1:148 for British N Scale. So buyers beware.

The class 66 is too new for me, but I preordered a Kato model of the new GM-NOHAB diesel, which looks like a F-Unit with double cabs, on 6-axle trucks. Just could not resist...

Graham Farish and Dapol both make a Class 66 in 1:148. Kato makes a Series 66 in 1:160. Luckily Kato only does continental roadnames, where as the the other two do only British roadnames.

Congratulations that is a nice engine. If you did EMS shipping you should get it in a couple of days. Did you order the N or HO scale version? Also are you running DC or DCC?
Have you taken a look at the new Kato Narita Express train, they really changed the design. Series E259 Narita Express (6-Car Set) (Model Train) Kato 10-821 Electric Car N Scale|1/150

I think the E259 looks like the Hitachi. I wonder if they changed suppliers when they bought the new Narita Express train sets. The Kato 253 Series NEX is a nice running set with factory lit cars.

Oh, and we'll want pictures when the EF66s arrive. I don't know what kind of couplers you are going to go with but I've been hankering to try Unimates on some of my Japanese trains.

I'll have to check my e mail again to see if I got a shipment notice. Mine's coming EMS. I noticed that they're already sold out at Hobby Search.
Bill, I like the tram you have on your web page. I've thought about getting one for myself someday. I might have to have a layout under a layout!
Bernard, my EF66 is N scale. I'm a DC guy, I don't know if I'll switch to Dcc or not, maybe someday. The EF66 I'm getting has rapido couplers. I might try and see if Kato couplers will work on it. I'd like to get a Blue Train for it to pull, since that's where I first saw this loco on TV. I have a bad (good!) feeling this is just a start of a collection of Japanese models. There's some other JR electric and steam locos I want!
