Thanks guys! What can I say. I was born with 10 thumbs. This unfortunate birth defect is why HO scale is as small as I can model. mad:
Well, the washes got away from me, so I had to roll back removing it all and starting over. So, the photo below is where she is right now. most of the detail parts are on minus most of the cab details. Both the orange and black are custom mixed. Next I'll decal then start the weathering process over again and hope for better results this time around.
That's too bad about the dullcoat, you had it nailed before you applied it. I read a detailing article about how it does that, and the writer had to over-do the chalks to compensate and then the dullcoat toned it down to where it should be. I still think some whitish clear coat sprayed on would yield what you are after. I haven't started weathering my units yet, I plan on finishing the detailing and then weather them all in one shot. I did post a thread "my spread" that has some pics of my loco's, many of which are still WIP.
Ok, the weathering is done. I may do some spot-weathering, but otherwise I'm calling it done. I departed from the exact prototype photo and incorporated a couple attributes from other proto photographs. I'm working on installing the hand rails now. Bending them from brass wire using Smokey Valley stanchions is another first for me. Here she is in full sun light.
Great job Bob, it looks like it has made several daring trips on the NMD, is that the famous Montana Gumbo I see? :tb-wink::thumbs_up:
Thanks guys. (I think... :tb-err: ) Ken, I don't believe there were any wash racks on the NMD in operation during my modeling time frame. They only got to the racks when they made the trip to Harlowton. They may have had one in Lewistown, but I can't verify that. GS, yep. The NMD is well known for gumbo when it's wet, and terrible dust the rest of the time. I custom mixed the dust color to get it as close as possible to what you can often see in prototype photos. I may tone the trucks down a little. We'll see... Oh, I updated the previous post with photos of her in sunlight.
I am not aware of any washing done north of Harlowton. I doubt that much was done by the late years at shops such as Harlowton. As their time and (no) money was usually needed just to keep insufficient available power operational. Boxcab E50
Ken, I didn't think so. I knew I had no memories of wash racks in Great Falls. Wasn't sure about Lewistown. It isn't surprising that there wasn't much washing of locomotives going on during the era I model. I hope I captured what a GP38-2 would have looked like on the NMD near the embargo. GS, Yeah buddy! The Roy area is nice. Very scarcely populated. Having lived in Montana most of my life, and now in Denver for 3 years... I can tell you scarcely populated is a VERY GOOD THING! I have a friend in Great Falls who used to farm in the Roy area. He sold out about 12 years ago retiring to Great Falls to be near his children.
Finished product I finally got around to finishing this one up. This one was done before I got a good handle on the orange fade. Cont....
Realistic enough! Looks like you left it outside in a couple of actual snow storms. :tb-wink: Boxcab E50
