I have a jar of the stuff for maybe six months now. Used it when I got it and worked fine. Tried it on a loco today and seemed to have thickened and didnt work so well. Anybody had this problem? I was thinking of cutting down just a bit with water.

    That...Snot so good...

I see you're in Indiana... where it gets cold a lot... needless to say the temperature may have caused premature snot thickening. The snot comes for the warm noses of bullfrogs in the arid desert... it doesn't like cold weather. My snot is in south Florida and has not had thickening issues... it seems perfectly happy here in the warm humid south. Even though we've had the coldest winter in 30 years... the average night temperature was about 50 degrees and daytime was about 70 degrees... well in the tolerance zone for the snot to remain runny. ;)

That stuff does last a long time on wheels huh? On it thickening...maybe stir it up with a toothpick. I dont know if it seperates with storage.

    * Just checked mine. I wrote the date I got it on top...12-15-08 !!

I opened it..was a little thicker then I remember. I did stir it up with a toothpick...and it seems to be back to the consistancy I remember. I havent re-snotted any wheels lately so cant attest to its properties in that respect.

You don't want to heat up , but maybe bring it in to warm location a window sill in a sunny room..

Just opened my jar to have a look, after sitting unopened through the Australian summer for a few months, about 80F here at the moment, it seems ok. Might have something to do with the cold.

Well now, I am willing to bet Rick will be here shortly to twist this up quite thoroughly.
I was lucky to get a jar and have had it for only one winter and it is stored in the garage. I probably do not have enough experience with it but it seemed to work fine when it was 40 degrees in my garage.

Bizarre coincidence. I opened mine last night, had it a couple of months and wondered exactly the same. Applied some last night to one of my poor pullers so it's currently curing but will be doing some test running this evening. Seemed to have dried ok though I may have applied a tiny bit too much and will need to re-apply. I did wonder if the slight thickening I thought I could see (or imagined) had contributed to the slightly thicker layer but I've not honed the art of application yet.

If it dries then it must contain some type of solvent. That means when opened and introduced to air the solvent starts to evaporate, just like a jar of paint. Putting the lid back on will sometimes not stop the material from getting thicker.
I use a lot of silicone, once opened it will get thicker and become unusable in 6-8 months, to help extend it's life I use a gas blanket to remove the air from the container before putting the lid back on.
