I've scanned a drawing of my first idea for a diaroma/module. I would love to hear your opinions and say whatever's on your mind.

I like it. You should end up with plenty of interesting angles with that, especially if you can come up with some sort of backscene that can be added when needed.

Looks like a good idea, but I'd hate to be driving one of those delivery trucks. Not much room to maneuver into the dock... :tb-shocked::tb-wink:

I know, but if I gave them more room I wouldn't be able to put in my house on the corner.

I like it that you are keeping it simple, and not trying to do some overly elaborate switch puzzle right out of the gate.

One thing you might look at is making that spur slightly longer along the warehouse. That would give you enough room for more than one car to be "loaded" at a time.

Is the house in that block related to the loading/unloading activities?

This scene ought to give you a lot of possibilities for views and such.

Thank's Mike I do want to put in a backdrop with some flats along it. Haven't thought that far yet

I just wanted a house on the corner. I left space for an entrance to the food warehouse from two streets because it was a bit tight.

I could extend the spur across the street and have more track on the next module.

You know, what you say about the possibility of extending the spur later ought togive you lots of possibilities.

This would be a fun module/scene to start and would give you, already, an interesting place to spot cars and pick them up.

Is there a general idea about which of the two tracks will serve which function on your layout? I was thinking that the one closest to the bottom edge of the plan would be a nice "through" route, where the other one might actually be part of a siding used for industrial switching and assembling trains.

Yes that's what I had in mind. The inner track will be a siding for spotting cars.

    changes

I've opened up the entrance on summer street so the trucks can get in and out much better. What do you all think?

Thanks ! Now I've got to build it !!!!! Help! First I've got to get some stuff and build a base. My friend, Jim, had a wood working shop. He's very good with wood and he said he would help me. I want it to be light so I can move it around by myself.

Here's what I would do; at minimum, I would put in a pair of switches somewhere above "front" - a pair of lefts - to connect the two lines. And then I'd try to find a way to put in a second set of switches [rights] to create a passing siding so you can re-order a car and the engine if the freight came in form the lower track and form the left

Now as for your town layout, I don't know how firm your land and zoning is, but...I'd mirror the house and Chatam Street - and put Chatam Street between the house and the Freightdock. This would give your truck drivers the room to back up to the dock [basically, the whole street is practically theirs!] and your house no longer have an industrial scene out the back window, which could include things like dumpsters and rotting cabbage! No thanks!!!

You could also deadend the second street by putting a small gas station there - although two road crossings might be nice too!

You may want to consider using extruded styrofoam for the base. Living in a colder climate, you should be able to find it at a home improvement store.

For my around the room layout I am using 2" thick 2' x 8' panels that support 40 psi. Here in the warmer climate, I purchase them from a firm that builds commercial refrigeration vaults. When mounted on the wood frame it makes for a very light assembly.

I look forward to watching your progress.

You've given me some good ideas about the streets. I could have two houses..maybe three! I'm going to re-draw it and see how it works. I'll work on it tonight Look for it tomorrow

    Candy's second try

Okay my friend helped me do this on his paint program. I've moved my track to the center and eliminated one street. Now I have room for more buildings and stuff and my trucks can back in. What do you think???

Looking good, to me, the next step would be to put everything into scale so you are 100% sure of what the real sizes will be. Many a draft designs have been sent to the bit bucket once true spacing was realized.
