    Making Cork Roadbed

This week I made my own cork roadbed for my SVL Extension project. Here are the pictures and you can read more about it in my most recent blog post at http://southviewlines.blogspot.com.

    Please give me your comments.

    SVL Extension: Cork Roadbed

This weekend I laid the cork roadbed for my extension. I used the turnout pads and the roadbed that I cut myself. I am very pleased with how it turned out. See the pictures below and you can also visit my blog at http://southviewlines.blogspot.com.

Now it is time for track!!

It's good to see another nice looking layout being built in the Metroplex.

Thanks Mopman. I have actually been building this layout for a few years now. I think I started in 2003. I am ashamed to say that I have not been as dilligent as I should have to get things completed. This extension is the kick in the pants I needed to get working on the layout again. You can see sheets hanging in the background in some of the pictures above. Those are covering the rest of the layout. Please visit my website to see what's under the sheets. Maybe once I get this extension operational, I can get on the layout tour for one of the area train shows. Not this year but hopefully next.

    Connection to Existing Layout

Here is how I am connecting the new extension to the existing layout. I made a tray so I could fill it with foam. This is where a road will pass under the tracks so the foam will be sloped down. Right now I am using two c-clamps to attach the new benchwork to the existing.

Well if you "tour" it on a Sunday, I might be able to get by and see it since I normally open my layout on Saturdays. I just committed to the 2011 show which will be three years running.

I will try to get by there. I normally don't go to the Plano show as I live in South Arlington. It's quite a haul to get to Plano. Maybe I can just plan on visiting your layout on the 15th.

Or you could PM me and maybe we can setup a "private" tour that would fit both of our schedules.

    Odds and Ends

I was able to make a little progress on the extension. I took care of a few things like more demo on the existing layout where the new extension will tie into it. I needed to adjust the trackwork to match the new trackplan. This area is ready for new track.

I also painted the backdrop the sky color and mounted it back on the extension.

Lastly, I fixed a couple of fascia cleats that were twisted slightly.

    Tracklaying Begins

Track laying has begun. I was able to get some of the projects completed around the house and steal enough time on the railroad to start laying track.

If you are wondering, I am using Atlas Code 55 flex track and Atlas Code 55 No.5 turnouts. I chose the number 5 turnouts since this extension is depicting a congested industrial area and because I had a bunch of them available.

I use clear adhesive caulk to secure my track. After cutting and filing the ends of the flex to fit, I put down a bead of the caulk on top of the cork. Then, I smooth it out with a scrap piece of cork. I take a few minutes to align the track by eye while the caulk is still wet. Then, the track is pressed down into the caulk and held in place by push pins until the caulk sets (about 30-45 minutes).

Note: I do not put adhesive under the turnouts at all. They are allowed to float and are held in place by the adjacent trackwork. This makes it a little easier for me to remove them later if needed for replacement or maintenance.

I have finished the trackwork on one side of the extension and I am now working on the other side. Here's a few pictures of what I have completed.

    Doug,
I approved that comment. I need to check to see where it went.

I might try to have the layout on tour next year, we'll see.

    SVL Extension: Trackwork Continues

I am continuing to lay track on the new extension. Here's some progress photos to show where I am.

I also worked on the existing part of the layout where the new extension will tie in. I was able to replace the track here following the new design.

All that is left on track laying is the area where the old and new connect. Here there will be four tracks that cross a city street using plate girder bridges. More on that later.

Mike, no worries, just wanted to make sure it wasn't something I was doing wrong on my end. I see the comment there now so either I missed it before or it was hanging out in the ethosphere for a while.

Glad you are having fun with the extension. It's really making great progress and looks awesome.
