Does anyone know if any other Z Intermodal items have been released to the public other than the items listed below? I know AZL is having runs and MCZ just came out with new paint schemes but I am not aware if any new items have emerged. Please review and comment. Interested!!!! Hobo Tim
I noticed recently that Harald Freudenreich has added a change to one of his containers. The MAERSK 40' reefer now has an external unit attached to the front of the container. Any updates to this? Are either the Alan Curtis or the Hobo Tim'z spine car kits available anywhere? Any other spine cars available or on the horizon? I'm just now getting in the game so I'm not sure how the market is. (I did see an AC kit on eBay for $150...a little more than I would hope to spend on a kit with no apparent decals available. I might go there eventually but for now I'll keep looking.)
The only update I know of is that AZL has looked into producing spine cars, but so far the manufacturers have declined to produce them.
Have you seen the 3D printed ones on Shapeways? http://www.shapeways.com/product/AM...2-5-car-set?li=user-profile&optionId=15096418 I haven't tried them as I have enough Alan Curtis whitemetal ones for my layout. They would probably need weight in the containers to make them track properly Kev
LOD Kev! Lack-Of-Detail For someone to go thru all the trouble of creating the 3D artwork for 5 articulating cars, they should have detailed the beams on each car. If I knew how to create artwork in 3D I would have already made brass CNC masters of the 53' & 57' Spine Cars and had someone professional cast them in white metal. Ugh! RP has its major pluses but all those modelers who go all goo-goo-gaa-gaa for it will someday pay the price when they drop their prized pieces and they go SPLASH! All that work now a hundred pieces on the floor. Modeling is just not what it use to be! Hobo Tim BTW- Doug A., I am the guy who made all of the Z decals for the Alan Curtis 89' Flats and the 48' Spine cars. Program is still in my computer.
Tim, when are you going to start working on z. It seems that most of modelers who started with z in the early 90's are not doing anything with the scale. Robert its very quiet. It's been years since I heard anything from David Freehling.
Hi Hobo Tim, yes I remember that from way back...I followed closely the Mi-Jack progression and I think I even shared some Intermodal photos with you that I had taken at Alliance Yard at that time. Wish now I'd bought one of those MiJacks... (and spine cars, and, and...) ;-) I'm sure with some patience I'll eventually find the things I want. Hey, on the bright side I noticed Z has some nice looking JBH 53ft containers....we don't even have that in N-scale. lol I'm not sure I would be so hard on the RP stuff. I certainly wouldn't buy those spine cars for a number of reasons. But I think there ARE some good applications for it, even now. And the future is bright, IMHO.
John Trust me when I say I want to excel in Z scale with so much, mainly Intermodal. If I know I was going to be away from my garage shop for 5+ years, I would have rented a house here in Arizona instead of this half trailer in an RV park. No one can seem to tell me how long I will be here. I do miss my shop! Things I can do; Create artwork for decals and etchings, print decals, print packaging, vacuum-forming, home etching, mold making, resin casting, white metal spin casting, painting and minor lathe/milling. The one thing I have not grasped yet is 3D artwork. Stony tried to get me started once but slow wi-fi and poor connections foiled the interaction. If only Stony lived closer to me! I have several ideas for Z scale that could benefit from RP but I need that know-how or someone who can put thought to 3D artwork for me. I know of the resources to change the artwork into masterpieces. Stony, you hankering to take a vacation in the White Mountains of Arizona anytime soon????? Doug, I still have those photos from the Alliance yard. I wish I could have been there as I would have taken a few more of that modern Mi-Jack showing all sides and details. I have poured over those photos trying to figure out every detail of that crane so I can replicate it in Z scale, N scale and HO. That is my next big item I want to do. Maxi IV's, SD70ACe, and the modern Mi-Jacks. Hmmm, I think I will go to the coal yard today as I believe a BNSF coal train is due to come thru. Hopefully it'll have a few of those brand spankin' new SD70ACe's on it that BNSF recently purchased. I call it Inspiration! I have lots of RP items but I would prefer those items be made of plastic or cast resin for durability. Tooooooooooo many times have I cracked or broke RP items that were delicate. I have nothing against RP, so please do not get me wrong, it is the modelers who go nutZ and Drool all over themselves who think RP is the answer to ALL modeling issues in Z scale. Everyone, I made a list a couple months back with my priorities of things I would like to make in Z scale. If I make it for myself, I would make a few handfuls for others, as I have always done in the past. The list is mostly Intermodal items. Some items require parts I cannot purchase or would be costly to develop and build myself. Case in Point! AZL Long-Shank Roller Bearing coupler trucks, the kind found under the 89' flat cars. I could use many upon many of those but the last time I inquired, "NO"! They are not going to make them available to the public. If only I could get my hands on a few hundred of them. DODX flats were made to carry 2 very-very heavy military pieces equipment such as M1 Tanks and M109 Self Propelled Howitzers . If one drove across a RTTX flat it would bend in the middle from the weight. That is all I am going to say about that! I apologize if I got off on a tangent! Sometimes, some people need the truth. I guess this could be the perfect time to ask this one question. What would the Intermodal Z community like to see first; a set of 57' articulating Spine Cars or A modern version of a Mi-Jack/Taylor container crane If I gotta start somewhere, might as well be with those questions! Tim, Your inspiring, enthusiastic attitude is just what the hobby needs to get some more life into it. We all remember those good old days when more of us were manufacturing up a storm. Maybe it will come back to some degree. I think manufacturers have the desire, but not the means, time, or other to accomplish their dreams. Isn't it a bummer that life gets in the way all too often and interferes with our dreams........sigh. Thanks for stiring the embers..

While I think a MiJack would be interesting, I would 100x rather have the spine cars. Whatever happened to the Alan Curtis tooling? I seem to recall that N-Scale Kits took the N stuff and someone else got the Z...is that correct? It seems they are very rare but granted I've only been looking for about two weeks.
