I'm sorry I posted on this thread.... wasn't trying to incite a flame war. If I could delete my comments I would.

This thread is starting to resemble an argument between Chev and Ford owners......neither is right or wrong.

However in a civilized society we should respect other people's choices, and not criticize others for their personal choices.

If it is thought that I am less tech savie because I model in HO, that is someone's opinion. Actually I am as low tech as I can be.

I am only in the cattle car forum, and I almost always go to the new posts when I log on. So I read almost all the threads from first to last.

This is Model Railroading, G, O, S, T, HO, N, or Z. (If I missed any scale, I apologize) Regardless of the size of the "trains" it is a hobby that we must all enjoy, or we would be doing something else.

    Just my opinion.

I'm so sorry ! I didn't want to start trouble ! I wish I had not posted this. It was just that I was startled by the difference in numbers.

I don't think you started any trouble. I think that some of these feelings expressed here have been expressed in other threads already.

I've been an N scaler and liked it, The only problem that I have with Nscalers is the persecution complex that leads to both incorrect assessments of things like the modern hobby press and insular N scale board only posting.

You did not start trouble. Basically, one person here has become truly carried away with wording. Right or wrong, others have merely expressed their opinions.

The fact is there are more N people here than HO. That can be changed. As I have noted before, keep posting your topics, keep chipping away at it.

As far as forum-centrism, it exists amongst many scales here AND elsewhere. I wander through them all as part of my job here, but also as I enjoy chatting with others about the hobby. I have modeled in O and S hi-rail/tinplate, HO, HOn30, On30 and N. Built layouts and modular.

This was a discussion of the number of HO folks vs. N folks on Trainboard, not a scale-bashing thread.

I currently model in HO scale, and have been in both HO and N scales since the mid-1970s. I've seen fine-quality and junk in both scales, and quite frankly I'm impressed at what is coming out in N scale. Having said that, I prefer HO scale mostly due to the amount of HO stuff I have.

I've seen some well-built & well-detailed layouts in HO and N scale ( and they are out there, if one has a mind as open as one's eyes). Matter of fact, there are well-built layouts in EVERY scale, not just N, or HO, or whatever the scale of choice is. If the N scalers on Trainboard want to be passionate about N, all well and good- they're playing with trains, just like we ALL are.

So what say we put the sabers away, sidetrack the derogatory comments about someone else's scale of choice (just because one person want to be ignorant, doesn't mean we have to respond in kind), and get back to the subject at hand.

If you can't be civil, be silent.

The one scale with by far the best detail and realism is impossible to buy at the LHS.....F scale. That would Full Size Scale...the real thing :). TrainBoard is very active in N Scale....so what there is allot of good content there as well. Yes, I would like to see more HO content but I still enjoy this website very much. From 2000 thru 2009 I was into N scale and Trainboard helped me jump back into this hobby. Much I what I learned in N Scale centric circles I am applying towards my current HO endeavors. Its about the trains and the love of trains.....whatever the scale. Though I cannot see myself going towards TT scale but that does not mean it is wrong for someone to do so.

    Candy,
I do tend to lurk on Trainboard way too much and I am staff member for crying out loud. :) Real life gets in the way for myself and probably does so for others as well. I will say that I have really enjoyed your postings and love the details scenes....Even though many do not always post, I can say that I have enjoyed your contributions and those of others very much. Tracy has been blowing me away with his scrach builds as well as Wolfgang and there are many others. Looking at others work inspires me to get off my duff and at least try to do the best I can. I currently do not have mad scenic skills but I am inspired to continue to learn.

As stated, if one can't be civil, be silent. There is no room here to bash anyone else for the skill level, scale choice, or any personal choices about our hobby. And if it is not hobby related, maybe it should not be posted here.

As far as costs go, I'd say 10-20 years ago, HO was hands down cheaper, Uncle Irv made sure of it.
Now adays, I'd say for comparative product meaning basic detail, DCC ready they're comparable. Rolling stock is comparable as well.

What HO absolutely positively has going for it over N scale though as far as price goes is the used market. There are thousands upon thousands of Blue Box and MDC kits out there. New Old stock, Used; often with Kadee #5s and sometimes metal wheels already applied. Narrow hood blue box Athearns abound.

And on the low end, Bachmann certainly makes a better basic locomotive in HO than they do in N. Heck, the Bachmann trainset GP40 of today was state of the art Atlas/Roco GP40 25 years ago, but with better fuel tank detail.

So, I'd say HO can be both cheaper (used, Bachmann) or more expensive (High Detail, DCC, Sound.)

A few words to my history.
When I started again model railroading in 1975, it was N scale. Due to space and those trains were so nice.

But in this time those little engines did not run as well as today. So I switched in 1980 to H0 scale. Now I have my Westport Terminal RR. But most recent is H0n3 for me. With narrow gauge you have smaller radii, shorter trains. And this like the prototype. Those Blackstone engines with sound run very good - and it's still H0!

Antiquated, hmm? Well I take that as a compliment:tb-biggrin:

Not really bashing N-scale, just trying to explain that for me, these are issues I can't get around as far as the scale goes. I realize that N-scale has come light years but still yet, to me the flanges stick out like a sore thumb (yes, even the newer ones) and the couplers as well. As you mentioned, there are techniques to get around the issues. like using z-scale couplers - but I would have a hard enough time seeing the N-scale couplers as they are, let alone mounting a Z-scale one to it.
That said, I admire N-scalers for their amazing work. I have seen some very impressive layouts at shows that leave me scratching my head and reaching for my reading glasses!
Speaking of z-scale, some of my favorite threads have been where they take Hallmark ornaments and make working locomotives out of them. Something I will never attempt but fascinating all the same.

Scale. Who cares about scale? As long as I can ride on it, I am happy.

A few days before the Oklahoma City train show in December of 2010, a group of us *****scalers ventured east from the city to the giant outdoor layout run by the LOCO club(Locomotive Operators of Central Oklahoma). They had the nerve to turn us loose on the layout to run trains unsupervised. Fortunately no blood was spilled.
