My wife always says I have too many trains all the time. I respond in kind that she has too any shoes on my way out to the dog house.

having enough is not the same as too many.

enough : the same number of locos/cars as the prototype did
too many : more locos/cars than the prototype did.

modeling in n-scale doesn't mean the roster has to be 1:160 as well ! (says someone with 450 engines and 1600 cars...)

Based on the Atlas advert in the February Model Railroader, I've pre-ordered via a UK source five 40ft reefers and a shorty tank car. On delivery, I'll DEFINITELY have "enough"!

    Regards,

    Pete

Interestingly enough my g/f and I were talking about this and the deal about "If we aren't modeling it, and we buy it we have too much" and the exception to the rule about honoring my great grandfather's service to the Pennsylvania Railroad with a PRR Set. We thought, why not add passenger trains representing BN's heritage, CBQ, GN, NP, SPS, Frisco... so that extends my exception list.

But one freaking train to represent each one. I.e. Empire Builder, Nebraska Zephyr (I am so not a California Zephyr Fan), anything beyond that is overkill and too much imo.

FVM keeps pumping out Milwaukee Road N scale cars faster than I can save up my money! Argh!

I see it this way. It is not our fault.
These companies keep making this stuff.
Some one has to buy and store it.
We do our part to keep the neighborhoods clear for what others think is important to them.

Do your part to clean up clutter. Buy model trains.

I hear that everyday from my wife until I sold some brass locos that I had sitting on a shelf. When she saw how much I got for them she now regards the hobby as a great 'great investment'. lol

Does your wife do the cooking? If so, you might want to think about geting a food tester like royalty in the past ....just saying :)

Just be careful here. If she starts seeing it beyond the above stated and envisions it as a gold mine or deep well to be pumped for other purposes..... Yikes.

I have heard this statement from my dad MANY times. My parents were at my house a couple weeks back and my dad saw all the jewel cases in the closet of my train room. He asked me, "What are all of those for?" I said those are jewel cases for the majority of my trains. He asked how many I had. I said there are 142 in that box and that doesn't include the ones I have bought that didn't have boxes for them. My dad just shook his head and said "Son, you have more trains than you need. You might want to diminish your stock."

So I did and I bought the love of my life her engagement ring with the $$$$.

My wife is pretty good about it all. I also fly RC planes and other typical hobbies. I usually get comments from people who don't value the hobbies I partake in. I just do my best to make sure it doesn't impact necessities or other obligations.

Not all the time, but often I find those people often spend their time and money on things I find absurd, so it's all up to personal taste.

However, if your children are wearing clothes many sizes too small or your car was just repossessed due to any hobby... that may be a good sign you are in too deep.

Outside of that, I wouldn't sweat it.

I used to be into classic cars. It dwarfed the cost of all my trains and planes put together and I can honestly say it's not as much fun as these.
