I have been busy this week holding a "Rail Camp" at the Rosenberg Railroad Museum. The kids build their own T-Trak module while learning some basic modeling skills. At the end of the week we plug them all together and run trains before they take their box home. Today is the big day for the conclusion of this session. Here are some photos from previous years camps. I will try to post some from today later.

I got news from a local railfanning friend that Thursday's Northbound Santa Fe Manifest had an interesting motive power combination on the head end.

When the train arrived in Sousa City, it was clear why it was an interesting consist. The standard SD45-2 consist had a SD26 sandwiched in the middle, and a borrowed F45 trailing the rear. If that wasn't enough, traffic re-routing resulting in the train being almost twice as long as normal, so an A-B-A set of F3's were affixed as helpers to get the train over Thomson Canyon.

I chased the train for a little ways past Sousa City, which was really easy, even with 6 units on the head end, this train was barely powered enough for the steep grade. A few miles out the train stopped at a red signal, with the crew griping to dispatch about the pain getting the train started again would pose. Looks like the MOW crew has been out replacing track, I don't recall that track panel being there before.

I drove around the back roads to reach a point on the other side of the Canyon, Giving me a clear shot of the bridge, with the F45 idling away on it.

All 6 units in this shot were required to move the model in the real world, the rear three units handled the 60 car train (normally my max is 35, what will fit in a staging yard) by themselves for most of the night, but after several laps, both the track and the wheels of the engines became polished from the running, and the engines no longer could pull the train up the club's 2% grades. So I had to dispatch the only engine set I could easily get out of the sousa city engine facility, an A-B-A set of P1K F3's. Well, something odd happened. I knew this set was a candidate for the infamous cracked gear issue simply because of their age. They had never posed a problem before, but after assisting the train over the summit, two of the f units began making that "THUMP, THUMP THUMP" sound of cracked axle gears. This also effectively lowered my tractive effort even more. So, just like in the story created above, the train crawled at low speed around the layout, and starting on any grade without slack in the train was impossible, I would have to back up the engines until the couplers where loose until the caboose, and then add power until the engines could move this train. Made for an interesting run. Towards the end of the night, I replaced the A-B-A set of F3's with 2 P2K GP30's. This is how the train ran until I split it back into two sections to fit in staging.

I blew the rest of my year's modeling budget (or until I pay it off in overtime) on a purchase that I sincerely hoped that I would not regret.

This thing is amazing. It's beautiful, and it runs surprisingly well. It came without a coupler on the tender, but there was a screw that accepted a MT 1015-1 quite nicely. It pulled 28 passenger cars this afternoon on (relatively) level track. It can probably pull more, but I was running out of passenger cars to test with. It can just barely negotiate a 15" radius curve, but that's definitely its lower limit; the slightest kink or imperfection will derail it. It navigates Atlas #5's with no problem, and it seems to do fine on my mainline 18" radius curves. I haven't had any issues with electrical pickup.

So far, this has been a winner, if an expensive one! Now it just needs a DCC decoder.

Like it says in the book of Hebrews: Teach a child in the way he should go, so when he grows, he will not stray from it.

From such things are seeds planted, and the next crop of model railroaders grown.

    Good on ya, Russ!

Actually, it's Proverbs 22:6. I agree with rest of your post, though.

Thanks folks. I always have fun with the kids. My wife even helped out this year and had a good time too.

I think it is one of the most worthwhile things we can do. I am sure a few of those children will always remember the trains.

This is a set of Stewart FTs in the modified paint scheme for out club railroad. It was fairly simple to modify the Burlington scheme and add the home made decals. Some members were really opposed to this as we had already adopted a different paint scheme and this was not it. Still this is the only SA&N engine we have after three years so at least we are operating now. Those Stewarts are great mechanisms.

Athearn Blue Box I detailed by adding the cab antennas, horns, etc. I used fiber optics and LEDs for correct headlight functions. The fiber optics were easier than I thought. I even added an L window.

Weathered more cars yesterday. Only had my LG smartphone, so the pictures didn't turn out all that great.
This C&O boxcar was weathered using a Jim Sands / Marshalltown, IA prototype photo from 1966. I'll get better shots on my layout next week, I was thrilled with the result.

I also ordered numerous detail parts for my major Athearn GP7 rebuild program (8 units + 1 GP7B), which will be the next project between trying to finish the track work on the bottom level / Ravenswood Yard lead and run around track + 2 curved switches.

That is a PRR T1 prototype. 6110 and 6111 were delivered by Baldwin in 1942 to demonstrate the refinements to the duplex design since the S1. After WWII, the PRR ordered 50 more production models. The production run lacked the full skirts (they got in the way of the maintenance crews), and had slightly less severe sloping on the nose.

These were the last steam engines purchased by the PRR.
