Sometimes you just have to run trains!! Forget the planning, building etc, and run 'em!!

So a little update. Printed some to scale unitrack pieces and laid my track plan out and finalized it how I liked it. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Things must be getting very exciting for you! Are you planning to have any elevation changes?

Yes in the landscaping. Track will be level but will have illusion of being different grade.

If you look at my previous renders I posted, you will get a feel for what I am going for.

Finally finished gluing down my template and started to mark some features like where my bridges are going. [IMG][IMG]

I also lengthened my yard for more action. [IMG]

You won't regret having added track space available.

For sure, especially since I am going to have a tourist excursion train. Run by a local historical railroad and restoration society. Going to need room to park it some where.

Got some more work done on the layout last night. Placed my main line loop down, fits perfectly thanks to Mike Fifers custom length unitrack tutorial. [IMG]

Pardon the mess as I was test running the trains and the main line is smooth as butter no hiccups or hang ups.

The final image shows my yard as a set of single ended sidings as i still need two switches, my bridges and a few more straight sections. Once that is purchased I can finalize the track, test some more and start wiring each piece of track and lay my 3 inch foam base.

In the mean time I will be plotting my terrain elements on the subbase. More pics to follow.

Definitely, especially since I have been planning like crazy this time around. No major issues encountered so far.

Quick update, haven't really touched my layout in weeks due to the summer. Going to be making a major push once kids in school.

However, I have been tinkering with ideas in my head and decided to forgo typical trussel and girder rail bridge design and go for scratch built concrete bridges which have been popping up more and more around the globe.

Here is the general concept of what I am going to model bridge wise.

For the high way over pass, I will be modeling an arch bridge with straight support columns above. Exactly as this. [IMG]

As for my rail bridges. Both the curved and straight are going to be flat decks with with large concrete spine and simple columns for support. Pictured here. [IMG]

Please let me know what you think.

Both those bridge types will look excellent, will be interesting to see the highway bridge in particular.

Been a while since I last posted. Made some more progress on the layout.

I have finished my subbase framing seen here. [IMG][IMG]

I also have installed the backdrop divider for my layout. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Next I will be laying down the track base and once that is done will be cutting and forming my terrain base skeletal structure.

Let me know what you think so far.

Looks good. Solid, but probably still lightweight. It looked like way too much structure until I realized it is all foam. Are you going to add supports for your scenery divider as a solid wall, or sandwich it between landforms? If the latter, you might be able to make it removable for maintenance issues.

    Nicely done.
Progress may be slow, but it's still progress.

Thats exactly what I was going for strong but lightweight. As for the back drop. Might sandwich it between two thin pieces of masonite or wood boards. Will go that route if the mountain skeletal structure is to flimsy as supports.

Got some more work done on the good old kicking horse pass. Laid my track subbase down, screwed it and glued it down.

Got my first section of land terrain shaping done. Its a little sunken valley or ridge. Dont know yet if I will be modeling a creek at the bottom or not.

    Started with skeletal structure. [IMG]

Then I proceeded to cover it with masking tape. Here are some shots. [IMG][IMG]

After all my terrain is shaped with masking tape I will be making a hard shell out of plaster and paper towels.
