I turned the odometer over to 50 last October. Wow... 50... Where did the time go? More gray hair than a few years ago, but that's relative to a shrinking population of it. Fortunately, I'm still in very good health, doctor says.

But when it comes to trains, I'm still the 10 year old kid that got a train set for Christmas 40 years ago. That magic will never fade.

I am 38 and am a 34 year N scale veteran. I got involved with model trains in 1979 when I was 4 years old by my Dad. Getting into the hobby was the best decision I EVER made. I have passed the torch down to my son. He got involved when he was about 4 years old as well.

The club I am involved with has a T-trak division as well that has kids in 4H of all ages. Some start in T-trak at a age of 6 and we have some that are teenagers. We promote the hobby to all ages as we all believe that everybody should have a hobby of some type, whether it be stamps, trains, RCs, or just building models. And I personally believe that ALL kids should have a hobby......and computers and video games are NOT a hobby.

Thanks, Mike. It's hard to believe that I've been modeling trains for over 40 years...

I'll be 49 this year and have been into Model Railroading for 29 of those years. I started as most have with the Christmas train set in HO scale. It was just a Tyco set but it gave me a great start in the hobby and for many years Christmas would bring more trains. I moved out of my parents home at 20 years old and I regret that I sold off all of the trains I had at the time. At 20 I never thought I would be back into the hobby.

Low and behold within 10 years I started getting the itch again. Getting started I found another full set of the Tyco Chattanooga Choo Choo that got me started as a kid. This brought back fond memories of watching the locomotive circle around the track puffing out smoke. Even the smell of the smoke brought fond memories to mind. For several years I bought several locomotives in HO scale to replace what I had as a kid. Unfortunately the limited space I had would not allow me to build the layout I wanted.

Jump ahead a few more years and I discovered N-Scale. I always knew it was there but was never impressed by the quality and detail of it. By the late 90s that had all changed for the better and I was hooked.

Now it's 2014 and I cannot believe I'm very close to 50! Seems like yesterday I was watching that Chattanooga locomotive puff around the layout.

As they say, "The older you get, the faster time goes by". I'm just glad I have had a hobby like this that has filled the first 49 years of my life with happiness.

Now, for another 49 years in this wonderful hobby.

If only you could invent a time machine. I'd gladly travel back and reduce the present day population for my era. :)

Man, if I could become 25 again with my current knowledge, I would be dangerous. Ooops, that isn't what you were referring to, was it....sorry. ;)

Old enough to know better, young enough to be glad I don't.
