I would call mine modern fantasy as the layout plan keeps changing as I learn more about my modeled area.
I've combined the modern day BPRR and Allegheny & Eastern into one line for sake of space, with a B&O steam powered excursion train running from a fantasy yard and roundhouse in Kane to a fantasy station in Kushequa via the old "Kushequa Route" (Mt. Jewett Kinzua and Riterville). Kushequa Station is owned by the PADCNR and is part of the Kinzua State Park. A trail allows sightseers to hike back up the valley to the remains of the Kinzua Viaduct, under the real modern day Skywalk. In real life, I doubt any of this will happen as the wreckage of the viaduct is far too dangerous for the general public to have access to it, hence the fantasy. It does however let me have a plausible reason to indulge in my recent reincrease of love for steam.

Well, the quick look says transition wins with 38.5%! Except the diesel era wins with 54.2%. So it looks like they both win. Most important is we're all playing with train so everyone wins.

I believe the comment (by another user, in another thread) that brought about this poll was the assertion that "modelers doing steam is just a small fraction of N-scale, most do 70's to modern, with modern diesel getting the big share."

Let the record show that this poll, anyway, shows more than 45% of respondents running steam, hardly a small fraction. And "modern diesel" was selected by only a third of respondents, a smaller share than those who selected the transition era.

Personally, it doesn't matter to me what era anyone chooses to model. I just dislike wildly inaccurate statements that are tossed out there as if they represent common knowledge.

And 55% choose diesels, I wonder what the split of diesel vs steam is in your transition era , late 40 to early 60's since the transition era was done in the late 50's and early diesel were in the 40's not the 70's.

Well...really depends how ya look at it...

I cant see where you got your "more than 45% of respondents running steam."

If you go strictly steam era 1920's thru 1940's you have 7%

Transition Steam and Diesel late 1940's-early 1960's is at 54% but what portion of those are steam and what portion is diesel ?

I agree "Modern" 1980's to now is at 33%

However...Early Diesels 1960 thru modern now is about 55%

It really doesnt matter to me either who runs what era. I guess you could say us diesel guys are really kickin butt though...lol :p

A little more than 7% for the two steam categories, and 38% for the transition era equals a little more than 45%.

I'd be willing to bet that virtually everyone modeling the transition era is running some steam ... that's primarily why people choose that era in the first place.

The original point of contention was that only a "small fraction" of N scalers run steam. That's demonstrably false.

However...Early Diesels 1960 thru modern now is about 55%

Transition Steam and Diesel late 1940's-early 1960's is 38.30%

There is NO way to determine that all 38% of that is steam. I realize you BELIEVE it is but that doesnt make it so. I could just as easily claim that 38% is diesel and add that to the already 55% diesel guys and claim diesels rule@ 93 % ...lol.

The only way would be a NEW poll questioning the transition guys and asking 'steam' or 'diesel' or 'both' and then tossing out the 'both' as they would cancel each other out.

Which basically "Transition Steam and Diesel late 1940's-early 1960's is 38.30%" asks just that.

I realize the steam guys are as passionate about their steam as we diesel guys are about diesels..

Maybe you could make a poll asking...

    1) Do you run Primarily Steam

    2) Do you run Primarily Diesel

And that would get you closer to the answer you seek ;-)

Personally. I think its all making a mountain out of a mole hill...LOL.

Then of course you have to figure that only 143 votes on a poll is a very small percentage of TB members. Its all so 'unscientific' ;-)

Let's see if I can agitate, agitate, agitate LOL!

Yes, even the steam engines in any scale of model railroading are electric powered locomotives.

Not sure what your point is George? For example I run equipment that best represents the Steam to Diesel transition era. Then all of that comes off the train layout and I run 60's to 80's train equipment. Where do I fit into this poll?

Some one absent mindedly made a blanket statement saying no one ran steam. May I suggest he hasn't been out to any rail shows, open house layout tours and visited any of the major hobby shops. Actually, I think I suggested he do just that back when the comment was made. But hey, he's entitled to his opinion and I can respect that. Now George's opinion...well....LOL...drat it, he's entitled to his too. Grin!

What happened to all the smiley faces? I was looking for the one with the tongue stuck out. Yeah, like the one in steamers post.

I can appreciate a steam locomotive, I even own a Bachman 2-8-0 and an Atlas 2 truck shay. But I prefer the 80's. specifically the CNR of the 80's.

Yikes! 3% modeling Pre-1920s. Guess we are the only two modeling Pre-Civil War.
