A long weekend has come to an end for me. I was hopping to get some train stuff done today as I have Monday off, however the weather here is bad (once again) and we're planning on loosing the power (which happens everytime the winds pick up over 20, or it snows, or it rains). No lie.

My weekend was spent getting up early and heading to the U of I college campus to the Armory and covering a model airplane event for the magazine I work for. The weekend was long and the weather did not help the attendance, or the vendors in both set up and take down but overall the event seemed to go okay. I hope next weekend I can get back on track and get the module project going for Galesburg RR Days.

So how about you? Did you get all that you wanted to get done this weekend? Let us know with a picture or two. We'll come back on Friday the 21st and do it all over again. Until then, stay warm and dry and...

    High Greens!

Well, we kept our power all weekend, anyway. We had enough snow last Thursday that I took the day off rather than get stranded on the road or end up in a snowbank, and then we got another storm Saturday into Sunday. More snow is forecast for tomorrow.

But, that gave me time to do trains. I spent most of the time on that single-sheathed boxcar. The first order of business was to create a decal sheet for it. While I was at it, I added the decal for my salt hopper that had gotten ruined when I tried to put it on the first time. Here's the "Hide Service Only" car for the Empire Leather Tanning Company:

There's a bit of touch-up needed on the lower door rail. I didn't have that on when I sprayed it, because I wanted the door to operate, so I'll have to get out the paints and do it manually.

Next on my schedule is a steel boxcar, which will be the diesel-era "Hides Only" car. I started on that one, too, while I was waiting for things to dry on the steam-era model. I got most of the grabs on, thankfully not as many since the steel car uses ladders, and I did the bracing on the underside prior to doing the brake components and lines. That's my job for the next snowstorm.

I went to Ottawa for the model train flea market, and came away with some good bargains. Eight freight cars - six hoppers and two tankers - and five more locos... One is a Bachmann GP40 - not the trainset type, another is a Proto F3A (just need an F3B and I have the entire CNR F3 roster), plus three dummies, an undecorated Athearn F7B, plus Proto FA2 and FB2, both CNR.

The GP40 and F7B will get painted for CNR.

A nice trip, with good weather, though the roads were messy and I used a lot a windshield washer juice.

This weekend I got a little done that was muchly needed. I started to show my daughter how to operatre the layout. I worked on programming a decoder that I started last year. Found the sound has an issue so I need to send it in to Digitrax for repair. I decaled and weathered a plate girder bridge. (first time weathering, turned out nicely). I put D&SM on the bridge and faded it out. The D&SM (Dorado and Silver Mountain) was a free lance layout my dad built and I help operated as a kid. When he passed away in 95' I inherited all the trains. I have redesigned and enlarged the original plan to fit in my house and to make it DCC friendly I started from scratch. His layout was based in the 1930's and was steam. Me I am modern. He only had two or three industries on his layout due to size restrictions. As the story goes the D&SM was purchased by the UTAH RR and has flourished under their watchful eye. The bridge is one of the last vestiges of the old railroad and shows what was in the past. My idea for honoring my father and remembering what he had done. I also laid some more road bed. Attemtped to attach the plows to two locos and found I need new couplers so that they fit. Will be done this next week.

Today is a Federal holiday, so my weekend 'ain't over yet'.

I patched over a GP30 and 2 SD45's. The GP30 (3285) got numbers applied, the 45's (4533 & 4562) still need number boards and numbers on the sides.

Partially assembled two Bowser Western Maryland 2 bay fishbelly hoppers. After looking at some prototype shots, they will need a lot of work, so those go back into the box until the new layout gets built.

Began submission for Achievement points towards MMR in Civil category. Just need to build the layout and document it!

Well I know it's tuesday, but I finished this late last night and weathered it this morning. BLI SD40-2 in NS Horse Head Scheme.
It started out as NW 1631.

Rebuilding this part of layout. The curves were to sharp, changed them to 16".The short bridge sections are old ones ,just for mockup. Waiting for new ones. The I-beams will go across the lower tracks and support the bridge. Got a lot more to do, but I think I will like the wider curves.

I always forget to stop and take a pic of something when I get it done, but this time I remembered. I got all 15 tracks for my roundhouse wired up and running, complete with on-off switches and an LED indicator for each track on the panel. I was pretty sick of gluing in that rail about track 12 or so. Now I need to put some stall numbers on the front, some signage near the entry doors and put on the roof, which is not trivial as there are 45 pieces of roof to install. Then its time to finish up the landscaping and on to the next section, which I am still trying to figure out (note the building bases behind the machine shop). DSC06820.JPG DSC06813.JPG

That's going to be one fine roundhouse. Please keep us up to date with progress pictures. Thanks for posting.
