More steam workings in Cumbria over the last few days

Firstly the 'Cumbrian Coast Express' seen at Kirkby in Furness where the Cumbrian Coast line curves around the top of the Duddon Estuary and heads south once more. The advertised motive power changed twice, originaly supposed to be Jubilee 4-6-0 45699 'Galatea' it was first changed to Royal Scot 4-6-0 46115 'Scots Guardsman' before eventually turning up hauled by long time Coast favourite 8F 2-8-0 48151.

Sprinting over the top road as the train headed around the Dalton loop I was able to catch it again at Lindal in Furness approaching the summit ot the steep grade from Dalton Junction

video for this one can be found at

A few days later on a baking hot June day I was able to catch a few trains around the north of the county

Firstly Jubilee 45699 Galatea was on 'The Fellsman'. This mid week excursion is nearly always fully booked due to the prominence it has had on various celebrity presented travel documentaries on British TV. We see it first approaching Cumwhinton on the Settle & Carlisle line getting near its destination at Carlisle.

later on a Freightliner Class 66 with a loaded coal train heads south and is followed by the return 'Fellsman'

Moving to Plumpton and then Shap on the West Coast main line saw a DRS class 66 on an ballast working

What was happening, which caused those changes in locomotives? Mechanical issues?

Sounded like some seriously flat spotted wheels in that last freight train.

How fast do they run the trains you photographed? A passenger train is not what the 8F's were designed for! :)

looking at the 'TOPS' list max speed for the 8F on the coast line was 60mph. 4 ft 8 drivers would be whizzing round pretty quick at that speed!

They certainly would Kev! Stanier would be proud (or maybe appalled!) ;)
