Looks like it could not decide whether to be purple or pink!

I was calling them "Tyco engines", because only Tyco would come up with butt-ugly paint jobs for their J-class locomotives.
And the ones lettered for SP were worse, due to lack of washing and poor body prep prior to repainting.

A bit loud, but light-years ahead of dip-job blue.

Yes, the "vomit bonnet". That moniker got back to BNSF corporate really fast and there were heated words on at least one forum from BNSF representatives along the lines of "how dare you!" But they got the message, so in the end it was railfans that kept the scheme from going any further.

I'm sad it's been repainted, although it was seriously ugly. Glad I have my pictures of it. The problem was the really odd blue-green-black. It was a strange, hideous color even without a locomotive underneath it. Probably a case of picking a color from a chip and getting an "oh my gosh..." result in real life.

I'd take the dip job blue over that (ugh) "Chessie" scheme. To me it defines "gaudy". Whenever I think of it, the word pictured in mind is spelled "Cheesy". Bleh.

So, lets see, we have some that love the KodaChrome and Some that hate it. Others that Hate the Vomit Bonnet, some that Like it. A few (wrong :)) people like Ken who can't stand the Chessie scheme and others (right thinking ;)) who love it.

    Makes for an interesting thread.

Chessie, perhaps a little loud in fresh paint, but late in the Chessie era, the colors looked great in coal dust, road soot and rust!

I liked the vomit bonnet though, hmmm gaudy looking diesels? hmmmmm, I'm not too sure I can think of a scheme I didn't like just for fun though let's say I was a bit iffy on SP&S RS3 #97... Couldn't find a good picture(there's one in my SP&S diesels book but I'm not too keen on capping a pic and placing it here, might land me in a heap of trouble) this model fits the bill. [IMG]

It makes me sad too. BUT! You must be $#!++ing me. Rail fans have absolutely no influence on the railroads and it would be arrogant beyond believe to think so. Jeez, I hope you make funny joke. The paint scheme... was a great corporate statement considering most of the fallen flags colors from previous mergers was incorporated into the paint scheme. Nothing traditional about it except for the former Santa Fe War Bonnet and Cigar Band across the nose. A great corporate image and yes I'd still (No Kidding) like to see it on the point of their official passenger trains.

I will leave you to your own conclusions but wowwa slow down here, reality check needed.

I might add here it was an experimental unit along with some others. It was the president of the railroad, stock holders and employees of the railroads that had a voice in the matter. The war bonnet, the creme colored and the pumpkins. From those choices they voted and the pumpkins won.

One of these, repainted correctly, would be the ultimate "heritage" unit. Are any still rostered?

Not questioning motive just revisiting history and the hysterical correctness.

I've always liked chessie system orange yellow and blue, as well as the kodachrome units spsf came up with.
Id say UP's heritage units are very gaudy.
