Re-Motoring a Concor Big Boy Well my son has decided that he likes the only loco I have that doesn't run. The Big Boy I bought it as a project some years back, but was told there was no reasonable motor to fit up to it at the time. Well hopefully in the last 6-8years that someone has come up with a replacement motor for it Anyone know where I can find a motor that is drop in - or somewhere to send it to get the motor replaced? If its not too fiddly Im ok, but with 2 fingers that have been sewn back on, not everything is as easy as I'd like. Thanks Bruce
Those old Rivarossi steamers all used the same can motor. This guy should be able to hook you up with a suitable replacement - http://www.micro-loco-motion.com/ Cheers, -Mark
Thanks Mark. I emailed him today, and got a reply within an hour.. Pretty good Pretty crap website though Not as expensive as I thought and some word doc's to go through with instructions to read first, before deciding on which engine to go with. I have Faulhaber 7 pole rare earth magnet equipped double shaft 1320 motors which are close to drop in. These are $79.95 each plus $23.50 shipping to Australia. Double shafts are special order items. The 1516tSR 123 double shaft is close to drop in but those are special orders from Germany and I need to order at least 5 of them and they run right at $100 each. One economy solution is to replace the armature in the stock motor. I have armatures $19.95 each. Sometimes the motor mags can be shot and armature replacement does not help. So home for some reading Thanks again. EDIT: Sent him some more questions, and instant replies! Love it!
Actually, the motor used in the Rivarossis depends on its vintage. The early ones have the same basic Riv. can motor used in the E8s, FMs, and steamers but the later ones have a different Japanese (I believe, it's been a while since I've had my 1989 version apart) open frame motor. The frame was modified to accomodate the later motor. Doug
I now just need to find someone who can do the job for me as I don't have any of the tooling or skillz to do this I don't think.
Pickle me grandmother.. hes alive! At this stage, none - looking at selling the unit to a bloke on nscale.net and put the money towards DCC chips for my others which Im going to have a massive firesale on and clear out what I don't need Since most of my engines are pre 2006 vintage so most of them are non drop in chip jobbies so sorta concerned about Then save up and get my Y6B's remotored and keep them instead. I believe they are much easier to deal with, shouldn't cost me too much to get them done I hope.. just finding all the good shops around here are gone... hows life Mr?
Virtual bird are you just "Bird" over of NsN? If so we've been chatting about some of your locos. I'm interested in your big boy as I don't mind projects. My only concern is freight from here to OZ - is there such as a thing as a cheap "slow boat to china" shipping option? Maybe we could work something out for those ConCor GS-4's you need done
yup tiny world slow boat is how I've been getting quotes on bits and pieces from the USA since its damn cheap there for anything ....
