February 1977 - ATSF U33B My collection started growing, and my Dad discovered the joys of painting and detailing locos... as I am now, thirty-odd years down the line.

December 1975 - Schlitz Reefer. I always liked the reefers with the splashy, unusual or humorous adverts.

October 1975 - The second layout, a little more elaborate, but on less real estate - 4x6 feet instead of the former 4x8. We had moved, so there was less room. Most of the buildings and other structures are scratchbuilt by my Dad.

Blast from the past - My second loco, a Cox GP35 - it was also my second favorite loco... I got this one for Christmas '74, along with a whole load of rolling stock. This picture was taken in September '74... going through the old slide collection, I notice that Dad piled up the train stuff throughout the year... and did photo ops on my layout while I was in school.

Blast from the past - First layout June '74. A closer view of one end of the layout, with the trusty old (well, new at that time) Shark leading a short train around the loop.

Blast from the past - First layout June '74. An overall view of the 4x8 layout. Cheesy looking, but for a 10-year-old, it was heaven on earth!

Blast from the past - My "layout" - the track "laid out" on the living room floor, Christmas 1973. Yep - that's the same Sharknose as in the recent picture...

GP35 CN 4000 - a more photogenic view of my first repaint/detailing job. Used to be a stock Athearn in Southern Pacific garb, bought it used at a train show/sale in Kemptville, Ontario, for $25. Added the antenna on top of the cab, the cab bell, some hoses on the pilot (#26 insulated wire!). Most fun with trains I have had in, well, 30 years... Had to grind out the ribs on the inside of the body to clear the flywheels - the loco didn't run with the body on... Makes me wonder if someone dropped a geep shell on a cab-unit frame?

SD40 CN 5243 - Bought used at same show as GP7. Runs nicely, snowplow pilot, a subtly weathered, my first loco after the 30-year drought. This is the one that made me decide to model CN. I will probably renumber it to 5000 - 5243 is a wide-cab model and that's a bit harder to do than messing with decals...

CFA16-4 CN 8720 - Proto 1000 bought at the same sale/show as the GP7. It was practically new in the box - the grab rails weren't all installed yet.
