What commodities were they usually moving in these cars?

Sorry - saw your query just now. These vans were used to ship LTL (less than trailer load) freight from North Vancouver to places up the line. In the heater vans and reefer vans, it was mostly beverages and groceries which needed to be protected from freezing in the winter months, and perishing in the heat during the summer months.

Labatt's had their own trailers going north with beer, and Safeway shipped their own reefer trailers north on the railway. In the 1990s BC Rail entered into an agreement with Overwaitea which resulted in a large fleet of 53' reefer trailers. They took groceries north and returned south with high grade Kraft pulp.

Thanks. That's what I was wondering.... Does this traffic still exist? Or is it gone?
