Classy. For the RR to have some matching painted diesels. This paint scheme certainly stood out.

That was SP's angle from the inception of the Daylight as far back as the late 20s; create something that would stand out! Imagine during the steam era when SP used available Daylight locomotives as helpers up and over California's Cuesta Grade!

Herb, that brings back memories. I wasn't even a railfan then, but came out to watch 4449 arrive in Lancaster, where I lived at the time, and the diesels had been cut off and were following. Little did I know that 7 years later I would become a rabid steam fan, and 12 years later be living 150 miles away from the great 4449.

Hi Fitz, thanks for your great story. I had been a fan of the Daylight for several years before while I was living just south of San Francisco in 1981. 1984 was my first chase of the #4449 from Tulare to LAUPT. I chased her again in 1986, saw her in Portland in 1987 and chased her again in 1989 during the 50th Anniverary ceremonies at Union Station in Los Angeles.

Did you get an opportunity to see #4449 along with the #844 recently? Would've loved to have seen them together!

      Take care and thanks!
