Point of Rocks Tunnel

This tunnel was built in 1902 and was originaly double tracked. Now westbound traffic goes through the tunnel and eastbound traffic comes around the tunnel between the mountain and the old C&O canal.

Is that the actual grade or just the angle of the camera?
    • Maryland Guy
It's the angle of the camera. There is virtually no grade there. I took the photo on the embankment of the C&O Canal and I guess I wasn't exactly level!

Wasn't there a near by B&O station of the same name. A famous structure? Is it still there?

Yes the Point of Rocks passenger station is only about a half mile east of this tunnel. I have at least one photo of the station on this site.

Is that station still standing today? Believe I saw a photo of it in an RI album? Somewhere, I have a slide of it. Given to me by a friend years ago. Always thought it was a neat depot.

      :D

The station stands at the center of the Old Main Line and the Metropolitan branch of the CSX. Look under structures and you can see at least one photo of it.

Darn! I've been looking for the slide mentioend previously. Can't find it! :(
