NCRC GP40's

Nebraska Central 4201, 4200, and 4202 take a rest in Shelby. Usually these locomotives are run in pairs, guess they needed some extra power this week. Taken 11/7/06

It seems like GP40s are common shortline power. I guess since there were over 1,200 made...

And had the reliable 16-645E3 16-cylinder engine, found in all of the -40-series EMDs. Also, they are relatively new, and weren't run into the ground by their previous owners, too.

When I first saw the thumbnail, thought I was looking at CP engines. What is the heritage of these units?

All 3 come from MKT. 4200 was 170, 4201 was 174, and 4202 was 177. I'm not shure about 4203 and 4204 but they are also probably from MKT. Note the yellow handrail post in this picture.

I belive all the other power has retained their original numbers, the SD45's (5315,5322) from D&RG and the GP7u's (2058,2101,2106) from ATSF.

I should also mention that i think the GP40's have been downgraded to GP38's.

I wish someone would paint their power in the MKT "John Deere" green scheme. I thought those colors were very classy. Oh well. These units look very good. Much better than some other spinoff short lines, etc.
