Maryland Midland Railroad

This railroad operates over the former Western Maryland trackage. The central office is in Union Bridge, Carroll County, Md but its line travels mostly through Frederick County, Md. One interesting thing is that the railroad frequentely switches cars down the middle of Farquar Street from one of its customers.

I wonder if any home owners there are railfans?

      :D

Actually many of the people in Union Bridge are unfriendly to railfans. I make one trip a year there because there is so little traffic and every year someone comes out of their house and tells me to get the hell off their street, someone calls the police, or someone comes out of their yard asking me what I am doing. On the other hand the employees of the Maryland Midland are the nicest people you would ever want to meet. Go into the office of the railroad and the secretary will immediately produce a release form which allows you to drive around their yard, take all the photos you want, and if she is not busy she will show you photos from years ago. The crewmen are also very friendly and more than willing to share movement times, etc.
In fact here is the railroad when it was resurected twenty five years ago.

Sad to know the general public seem to be jerks. Great to know the RR is friendly!

I have a MMID train order from Union Bridge. Wrote them years ago, and they promptly sent me one. Very nice! Also possibly have a WM or PRR flimsy.

The streak continues. Last week I was in Union Bridge and some moron came out of his house and asked me why I was taking photos of his car. Wouldn't you think that he would have noticed other railfans?

Did you "explain" to the fool, that his junker wasn't worthy of a photo?

Its a town full of paranoid people. Last summer a woman thought that I was a private investigator watching her house.

Wow. Certainly can't disagree with that word. Definitely an unusual population. Makes me wonder why... Maybe their water supply needs testing? Ha ha.

Its been awhile since I've visited the site but sad to say that street running ended on September 30, 2007. The Maryland Midland has been swallowed by the Genesee & Wyoming but retains the name for now. Cement loads are now run around the town on a new lead to the mainline. The last I heard the tracks were being torn up.
