DRGW Helper Dispatcher's Dial-a-Track
Here's a wonderful example of a classic hack (in the positive, classic sense of the term): A modified telephone dial that enabled the Helper dispatcher to route incoming trains to one of seven waiting tracks or to the main line. Westbound trains would accumulate at Helper during the day, waiting to be equipped with helpers to make the trip up the 2.4% grades to Soldier Summit. I believe that dialing a given number served both to illuminate the signals and align the turnouts correctly. Dated 1941. Part of the collection at the Western Mining & Railroad Museum, Helper, Utah. Dated 1941.
