June 12 - Cooke Road Crossing - 8:30 - 9:30 pm EST

The GP40-2 / RDMT road slug combo 1-2 punch... with new paint jobs, no less! They're pulling empty hops and barley hoppers from the Annheiser Busch plant not far from here.

Is the slug set up with full controls to lead? Or is that allowed?

Apparently, CSX calls these road slugs "Road Mates". They have a cab so they can lead on the return trip. They are specially modified GP30's, 35's, 40's, etc that have been turned into added, tractive power... effectively turning the GP40-2 into an 8 axle 3000 HP engine :D

Has the electrical of the GP40-2 been upgraded? Such as a different generation system? Or is the stock unit hefty enough to keep up with those extra traction motors?

I know they had to do some modifications to the systems in order to accommodate this "road mate" configuration... just not sure what. So far as I understood it, the primary motive power had enough juice to left over to turn the road slug's motors at low speeds without upgrading or retrofitting some sort of newfangled generator, etc... Pretty much the entire "job" trip from the Parsons Street yard in downtown Columbus to the Busch plant is through-city speed limits of 10-45 mph (depending on the zone).

But, not being someone who designs these things, I have to go by what others, who seem to know more on the subject than I do, tell me. ;)
