Amtrak in the beginning was a mix of equipment from the former passenger carriers. Heres the South Wind (northbound) at Seymour, In. with Louisville and Nashville engines and mostly Seaboard Coast Line passenger cars. June, 1971 (An oddity of the route across Indiana was that most of the route was unsignaled, operated by manual block).

By manual block, do you mean dark territory and train orders?

      Yep, dark territory.
Louisville to Indianapolis (ex PRR) was dark.
Indy to Lafayette (ex NYC) was partly signaled.
Lafayette to Kankakee, Il. (NYC) was dark.

For what it's worth, The Ex ACL line used from Montgomary, Al. to Waycross, Ga. was also dark.

I would not mind seeing those days again. Just to have a camera, and catch the mish-mash of equipment. For a while, it was certainly colorful. Got to see stuff we'd otherwise never view.
