      Plenty of ballast. What kind of speed on this tangent?

      I think 30 m/ph at most. It is not an important line, only short freights use it these days. It is part of an old line that has been abandoned for the largest part.

      Those rails in between- Are they for an upgrade project?

      I really do not know. I think that the line already has been upgraded. Maybe they just did not pick up the old rails?
