In the Spring of 1994, Union Pacific #3985 blasts through the rock formations of the Upper Narrows of Victorville, CA.
STEAM!!! I have spent lots of time chasing, and photographing this old gal....
Very nice shot!!!
Thanks so much. I first rode behind her during Steam Show 1982 between Salt Lake City and Provo, UT. Great runbys too! She was still a coal burner in those days and really lit up the hillsides from glowing embers.
She must have been moving at a fair speed. The way that smoke plume lays back.
When I look back at the video I shot, I'd guess 45-50 MPH. Maybe more!
I'm planning to shoot this one when it comes to my neck of the woods!!!!
Will it be heading to Mississippi any time soon or would it be easier to chase it where it's going to be running? It sounds like the overhaul work on her will be completed before too long.
She was REALLY something in her coal burning days!
I'll probably be in Arkansas on the ex-Cotton Belt Line or the Missouri Pacific Lines.
Make sure to post some images clinchfield654. All the best!
Are there any UP lines in Mississippi? Seems like their steam has been mostly on their own rails recently.
No UP lines in Mississippi. I planned this one out well, I may railfan in Arkansas and Missouri. But we do get UP coal trains in Mississippi.
Oh, You noticed that the thing once ran as Clinchfield 676?
