The tardy westbound #3 Southwest Chief, led by Amtrak F40PH #230, drifts downgrade through Verdemont in Cajon Pass on May 14, 1988. This is the final day this subdivision would be known as the 1st Sub. The following day this subdivision would become known as the Cajon Sub.

      I don't recall any specific details as to why #3 was late. By the time it got this far west though, it could be just a matter of physical plant capacity issues extending clear back to Chicago. When on schedule, #3 usually went through the Pass in darkness.
