So after much mashing of teeth and pulling of hair I have decided on the future of the layout. I have had some motivation issues that have stopped forward progress. I spent a lot of time deciding whether to model the Camas Prairie (and sell off most of my rolling stock/motive power) 1st and 2nd sub or going fee lance. I have decided that running thru freights with a variety of motive power and rolling stock and tailored operations outweighed my desire to model a light traffic prototype. I am finalizing some sketches and track diagrams. May still include the 2nd sub as a third deck from Arrow to Stites if I can easily fit it into my current design. Was funny how difficult it was to decide. I have done a ton of research on the Camas and could have really done it justice but I figured selling off my rolling stock and motive power that I spent time and $$ on combined with the fact I'm anal retentive and would probably go crazy trying to accurately model the Camas wasn't in the cards. Hope to get back into the train room this weekend.
It sounds like you should plant your flag in what I've heard called proto-lancing. Use your chosen inspiration as a base and apply a heavy dose of modeler's license. Good luck!
I never did like the term "free-lance", as I always considered it a misapplication. Usually I call it a non-historic. As "proto-lancing" could actually be interpreted any number of ways, I do not mind it. I "proto-lance" and have a non-historic. This allows for the running of prototypes of which I was a customer in my younger days as well as allowing for the operation of equipment that these prototypes did not operate.
I can see the need to change plans. I was modeling the Southern Pacific in Arizona during the 1980's, and as much as I love the SP, I always wanted an N Scale Pacific Electric freight railroad...with a little pushing from Joe D'Amato and Arnold releasing an N Scale SW1...well things change. I decided to protolance a Pacific Electric branch that was just dieselized and the wires just came down. It is based on a freight line that lasted until 1988
Still playing with some final details on Lewistown, ID. Trying to decide with adding the down town area with several industries or about 20 feet of main line running. I already have plenty of switching in the yard area. With the main heading north out of town across the Clear Creek River I have an opportunity with going straight into staging and modeling the trackage south into town or the main line crossing the bridge and heading down the snake river. choices choices choices. My lower deck is complete will get to model a bit of Lapwai canyon, Craigmont, lawyers creek trestle and Graingeville.
Tony, when you can, would you show us your plan? I'm looking forward to it. With the work you've done before it will be an amazing layout.
This Lapwai Canyon? How many of the trestles do you plan to model? http://www.railpictures.net/photo/434953/

May be hard to see but these are the plans. Will be a proto-freelance layout. Will be able to get some main line modeling in with some elements of the Camas Prairie. I figure I will have about 8 areas that will be prototypical and I could shoot some photos with BN and UP GPs in the lead and it will pass for the second sub of the Camas.
Well, I protolance the same railroad and area, but as though it continued on both west and east to Butte/Anaconda.My eras are dual - 1950 and 1970. I'm watching your progress with great interest.
thanks for posting the plans. I like the direction a lot and yes I can see a lot of 2nd sub Camas potential there.
