I'm about to take the leap and try to install my first DCC decoder into an Intermountain SD40T-2, and would appreciate any hints or suggestions. I have a Digitrax DB166I0 decoder, kapton tape, tools, etc. What is the best way to remove the shell without messing up the handrails and any other details? Thanks!
Hold the fuel tank in one hand, and the center of the shell in the other. Lift/wiggle very gently, and the shell will work its way off. Do not yank.
Intermountain shells are not very tight so they should come right off using Rick's steps. For Kato and Atlas, Metro Red Lines' video describes a way to do it. I do all of my removals by hand.
