UMTRR: That can't be the layout you are referring to...not unitrak, no carnival rides, hardly any structures and just a figure 8. Not even $1K.

No the original listing was removed by the seller and did seem to have some nice stuff on it but I think it was made from bachmann ez track and not unitrack.

The fair scene was done pretty nice too. Wonder if they sold it privately.

E-pay is what it is. And isn't likely to be anymore then what it is.
You've no doubt heard me say it before. "Let the buyer beware."
Do read everything posted about the item.
    Exam the pictures.
And don't blame anybody else but yourself if you ... didn't.

    Or something like that.

Yes, that's exactly what happened. The original $999 layout was in my Watch List but when I clicked on the link later, eBay told me that the item was no longer available and "helpfully" showed me something else...

The WORST thing about looking for SP on 'that site' is looking at a seemingly endless supply of Readers Digest unpowered GP-35s and rolling stock that people think are 'vintage' and therefore worth big bucks. Please, make them go away...

Even as an HO guy, I see those cars all the time. The locomotive looks pretty bad, but are any of the cars prototypical? Has anybody turned them into decent models through detailing or truck swaps or the like?

Try this in the search field "n scale southern pacific -(speed, readers)". It doesn't get rid of all that junk but it eliminates most of it.

    Espeeman: Thanks

Mr. Trainiac: I actually have two or three cars that I have repainted and run. They have trucks and couplers that are total junk but cutting off the pins on the bottom you can put MT trucks. The bodies of some are total knockoffs of other cars (Atlas/LL/Bachman) that are already out so they really don't bring anything new to the party.

I am not surprised at how many people on ebay which try to sell model railroad items and butcher the Model Railroad's Manufacturers name ... example MINITRIX was spelled Minitrax one spelled it as minitrex .

 I have a friend who specifically seeks botched eBay spellings in hope of bidding low on items that escape searches using correct spellings. I don't have the patience for it and incorrect spellings on eBay indicate to me that the Seller doesn't pay attention to details and doesn't know what he's selling.

It is also common to see pictures that don't come close to matching the item description. I am afraid to bid on those because I have no idea which item I would actually receive. If I really want the item in the picture or description, I will send the seller a message pointing out the error and asking for a correction so I know what I am bidding for. Most sellers do make the corrections, but some seem to be completely missing in action. The latter type I don't do business with.

With a picture like that, and "Please look close at the pictures,, is selling AS-IS, as pictured", plus "Seller does not accept returns", it seems like idiocy to bid on this item. But, people are bidding. He says "Please ask any questions", but did not respond to one about whether it runs and could we get better pictures. I had to return one of these (to another seller) before, because of buggered valve gear that locked the drivers. Can't even see the valve gear on this one.

And the seller's name is "alwaysfishing" . Is that in a stream, or for suckers on eBay?

Actually, the seller is "alwaysfishing2". We are left to wonder what he did as "alwaysfishing" and "alwaysfishing1" that got him to use number 2.

I'm going to guess as in a stream. Maybe this individual needs to take a break from fishing and concentrate on some photography skills. Unless of course the photo is blurry on purpose to hide something and they are actually fishing for suckers. The more I sit here thinking 'bout it it's a close call as to which it really is.
