All, This happens to be out of curiosity. I noticed while searching for N-SCALE JEWEL CASES on ebay I found many with out the Foam or Plastic Insert.. you know those inserts the ones which the manufacturers use to keep the cars or Locomotives from being Jostled during shipment. Why is it that those on ebay offer N-SCALE JEWEL CASES for sale they never seem to have the corresponding Manufacturers Insert when the case does have the Paper Label. Am I the only one who is asking why aren’t the inserts included in the Jewel Cases being sold on ebay? Example below. You ask an interesting question. Now I, too, am wondering what it is they are thinking or doing with the cradles and inserts.
First time I've ever seen that warning on ebay. Maybe they place the inserts with the cars in a flat drawer?
Ignorant sellers who just think the inserts are "trash,' or, as Traindork suggests, the original owner kept the inserts to use in drawers/cases/etc.
I needed jewel cases a few years back for some older freight cars. I use Micro Trains cases, and I also use their nests. They've made just about everything, so their nests always worked, even if they need a little trimming. I ordered an Atlas PS 2-bay covered hopper several yrs ago on Ebay. It had the correct jewel case and label, but no nest !!! All four stirrups were broke off, brake wheel was broke, one coupler broke, and one end of roof walk was broke. The seller made the mistake of including his phone number. I'm willing to bet his ears are still ringing !!! He gave me a full refund, and I got to keep the car. Two years later, same type of car. It came in a small box tightly wrapped in bubble wrap !!! No jewel case at all !!! Two stirrups broke off, another broken coupler. Once again, after a short, one-sided "discussion", I got a refund and kept the car. Ironic thing is, both cars were Penn Central !!!
Could it be that some original buyers feel the nests are a nuisance, and just throw them away so that they can more easily just toss the cars back into the jewel cases?
To anyone out there, I have a box of nests for freight, passenger and locos. No idea what exactly except that there aren't any 40' boxcar nests. I also have a box of paper inserts. Most are MTL for cars with an assortment of manufacturers for locos. Just a heads up that there won't be any New England roads. Feel free to inquire if looking for something. If I have it, you can have it. Clint
Maybe we can ask Clint why he ended up with a box full of nests and paper inserts? That can give some insight on the other side of the fence and how they become separated for their jewel boxes. Just curious....
I have purchased a lot of parts locomotives that come in their original boxes. Often they get stripped down for parts and the box, insert and nest is no longer needed. I bough a bunch of MTL empty boxes with nests and inserts. The paper inserts weren't needed. I also buy a lot of stuff off of eBay and it often comes in boxes that are not correct. I never throw anything away. My collection of that's items has grown over decades so it is not like I actively searching for and collect them.
MTL sells inserts separately, if you find yourself needing some. As for what is selling on eBay - there is just no explaining what some of those sellers are thinking.
