Anyone here ever scratchbuild using these mediums? If so, what tools and glue are used
    and do you have photos?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Jeff,

Sorry no photos but I did help my wife build some arcitechual (sp?) models out of foam core. They were in 1/4" scale. We just used white Elmer's glue. For the tools, a very sharp exacto knife is needed. The foam and paper tend to dull them up quickly so change your blades often.

I use foamcore all the time. I make a box, then wrap it with printed paper. The skyscrapers holding up the second deck are just foamcoare boxes.

I too built architectural models for a while. Foamcore comes in different thicknesses. 1/8" foamcore corresponds to 6" in 1:48 scale, so it's great for exterior walls.

    White glue works just great.

Thanks, BMRR! And welcome to Trainboard!

That's a really old shot. You can check my railimages album for updates: http://www.railimages.com/gallery/petenolan

I've replaced one of the foamcore buildings with a built-up 3D model made from the roofs (rooves?) of Bachmann Train Car kits, which were on sale for about $1.00 a few years back.

Foamcore board is an excellent material to work with. The paper face makes it easy to either adhere to, or to mark a pattern to cut. Use a sharp snap-off blade box cutter and a straight edge guide your cut. If you get accomplished at cutting miters, you can build bridge supports and other 3 dimensional structures. I've successfully peeled off one face of paper to leave a toothy paper surface which I plastered to simulate rough concrete.

Foamcore is useful to make risers with as well. Cut wedges in foamcore and top it with one more piece which is shaved at top and bottom to ease the transition. The risers can also be scored and bent to form radiused risers.

Glue with yellow carpenter's glue or latex adhesive. Do not use CA. It will dissolve the foam.

    Absolutely! Let's see, I've gotten it in 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and, once, 3/4" thick. I buy it in 4' x 8' sheets, although you can get it in 4' x 12' sheets too. It's cheap--about $15-20 for a 4 x 8 sheet. And there are many grades.
