I've noticed quite a few spikes sticking up in recent photographs and interestingly, you would think they would be in groups if the rail was getting lifted and it seems like they're random. Of course if it was vibration causing it or poor ties, that would explain it, I guess.

A sight rapidly fading from the American railroad scene are classic era signals. This searchlight signal is still in use, protecting NS's lines in Columbia, SC. The rectangular plate with the "fishtail" ends is a legacy of semaphore signals and indicates that this is a "distant" signal, giving notice that there's a home signal ahead at the NS/CSX interlocking. Lanark? Illinois, former Milwaukee Road track? Looks like they are busy doing some nearby right of way maintenance.

Thanks -- I had no idea where "Lanark" is or its rail heritage. (y)

One of the Katy's slogans was "Serves the Southwest Well". I did not realize that their tracks may have actually gone through that well. He he he....

That is really a cool catch and a great looking unit. I was unaware it had been done. Really like it. (y)(y)(y)
