Finally got around to getting directions done and model kits posted in my store for my Ohio crane kit. Available in standard cab and high rise cab. This is not an easy build, do watch the video directions to make sure you're OK with building it before you buy it.

You would (and still can) find this crane on most Midwest and west coast American railroads along with all of Canada. You'd also find this crane at industrial sites all over North America.

Cant post a link to the kit for sale because its against the rules.... Look up "Micro American Rail Prototypes" under "shops" at Shapeways and you'll find my site an these kits.

Brass bucket and magnet will be available in my store soon.

Nice. I have been wanting to try a Shapeways build and so this will be my first. Your instructions are really well done too. I know you said it is a difficult build but after several Archistories kits and Animek I should be fine, if the parts fit small is not a problem. Rigging can be finicky but this again is well illustrated by you.
After the primer is there a particular paint for color? I like acrylics for ease of use but I mean you must have seen a few of these cranes so what colors match the manufacturers? I'll have a look on line to see what they look like in the wild.

I do not see the clam shell bucket in the Sprue! Does it come with the kit?

    Thanks

    Tim,

He mentions above that the bucket and magnet will be available soon. A separate brass purchase, I would imagine.

    Glad you like it everybody!

Acrylics are must with FUD material for final paint. The primer I recommend in the video is lacquer based. But it will not hurt the FUD material and drys fast. It also seals it well. I use badger railroad acrylic paints (Badger MODEL flex paint). Dries fast and its ready to spray right out of the bottle, no thinning required. Enamels paints take forever to dry on FUD. Even after being sealed with primer.

As for color, if you are using as an MOW for a railroad, most likely it would be a black carbody and the upper works would most likely be their MOW color with a black boom. If you use it in a scrap yard or industrial yard, you can paint it any color under the sun. A lot of times these get repainted by owners or even custom paint job from the factory. But you can never go wrong with railbox yellow for the upper works and black for the boom and carbody.

The brass version helps keep the string taught. I'll have that available soon. Its also part of my idler tool car kit that is for sale in my store and works with this crane and my wreck cranes that are for sale. It comes with all the goodies you see in the picks except the chains. Kit comes with two open clam shell buckets and two closed ones.

But I will also be putting out a small kit that will allow you to use any flat car for an idler car and it will come with a set of clam shell buckets.

    Hi,

For painting Shapeways fine detail plastic, I use Tamiya primer from a spraycan. For color paint (airbrush) Tamiya, Revell aqua color or Vallejo.

Revell aqua color 310 (Lufthansa yellow) matches UP yellow. Very well.

Adding a tool to adjust the height of the boom and the main hoist is genius, sir. This is beautiful work.

Seriously, does anyone here know where to get or how to make (print at home) tiny decals? Maybe google will know.

I know how, but am nowhere near setup to do it these days. What you need to do is learn a drawing program like Corel Draw or similar, draw up your artwork or lettering, and send it to someone who has an Alps printer or other white ink printer if white or other color is required for a non white model.

So, I used to make all my own decals, but have moved to my retirement home. I still don't have a workbench or sufficent electrical to setup my shop, and am disabled just enough that i have to have someone help me set everything up.

These days to set yourself up for white decals is more expensive, with the new Digital T Shirt printers capable of printing waterslide decals in colors over white. There are people who are setup in the larger scales to do this work, and you could send them your artwork to print, it just takes some searching to find them.

I had given away my old computer before moving, so I need to order a newer copy of Corel Draw that runs on windows 10 before I can do the artwork again.

Now if you just need black lettering, or are willing to print color onto white inkjet waterslide decal paper then cut it out close with a #11 exacto blade, then you can just use a color inkjet or laser printer. Waterslide decal paper is available in clear and white, and in all paper sizes.

Thank you, I will try to print onto waterslide decal paper, I'll do some more research into how to do that on my own.
I may also ask "Callie Graphics" what they would charge for decals, we use them for model airplane decals but not original stuff, they just make sets for all the popular RC model airplanes. But I would just sent them pictures and dimensions of the letters I want. But they do larger stuff. i was hoping there is someone who specializes in decals for model trains or Shapeways stuff.

I have heard a lot of good things about Shawmut car shops but have not tried these guys yet. I have been in contact with them and they do print out custom z scale decals. They also have a lot of RR road name artwork that I believe they can shrink up and down to the size you need.

    https://shawmutcarshops.com/

Do keep in mind, small versions of the UP shield on water slide decals are not going to be crisp and clean as seen on MTL and AZL cars.

You can also get small UP symbols on Micro Scale decal sheets in N guage. the one used on this crane image I think came from this sheet if I remember correctly.

    http://www.microscale.com/Merchant2...Code=MD&Product_Code=60-1531&Category_Code=UP

Only crappy part about ordering from them is that they have a $20 minimum. But you can find tons of Micro scale decal sets on Ebay.
