I'd like to put together one typical passenger train made up of lightweight cars that would of been found on UP's tracks in the early '60's. Probably looking for used on eBay.

Any recommendations on which manufacture to look for? I'm assuming I'd want all the cars to come from the same manufacture?

    Thanks,

If you can find them the Kato UP cars are worth it in my opinion. The City of Los Angeles set or the older "no name train" sets are nice. The "Business Train" with the flag baggage car and business car on the end has some useful cars also. If you search on:
106-087 Union Pacific City of Los Angeles
There seems to be a number of places that have them in stock yet.

City of los angels is an 11 car set and the excursion set I think is 6 or 7 cars and also they have 4 and 6 car bookcase sets as well as 4 car sets a,b,c,d d is a pricy one if you come across it. And concor came back out with streamline up cars and they are individually sold so you can make up your own consist. Hope this helps

Thanks guys this has been a big help.

Will the Con-cor cars work on code 55? Also looks like I'd end up having to change out the trucks and couplers at some point so at that point the Kato are probably less money even though they are a little more up front.

Could I mix Con-cor and Kato cars if they are both lightweight smooth side cars or will they not look right? From looking a pictures of the cars I'm thinking I should stay with one or the other manufacture?

I like the City of Los Angles set and have found a few. It might make a longer train than I'd like but I could break it up some and pick up a few more cars for maybe two separate trains. I like the fact they will run on code 55 and the couplers and such. Not interested in the excursion set so much as it was later and I'm using 1975 as a cutoff for the layout.

Thanks for the help with this,

    Sumner

To mix cars you will need to experiment. The couplers may be incompatible. There were two different versions of the Kato coupler and I think several on the ConCor cars. The MT cars are all HW, so at best only on the head of the train.

If you want specific cars, to build an actual consist, Check for Roberto Martari's etched sides.
