Prairie Unique is an awesome store! He is an RC nut, so there are aircraft hanging everywhere! He has some train and model stuff as well as local and Montana history books, made in MT gift stuff and locally made things. Overall it is a decent place! He even moved into the modern era and have a website!

Yesterday was a rail day, too. Here's a couple vids and some pics.

    Ooops... Sorry, read too fast.

Speaking of the above stockyard, I'm just surprised to see one looking like operative : I thought I had read here or there that RR had completely lost stock hauling market to trucks in the US... Or is this stockyard now only beeing a shed for livestock beeing grown in neighbouring fields ?

Stockyard is only served by truck, but is still in it's original rail location.

Christmas eve morning the yard crew was busy setting up a train. Was interesting because they had one car on the front of their power. I didn't video how they dropped it, but the gist of it is, the yard has a slope to the west, so they drop the car, move the power and then realign the switch. After that, the brakeman releases the handbrake and lets it just coast onto the front of the cars that were just dropped. Fun to watch, but I dunno if it is in accordance with rules, so I didn't film that part.

Then last night, after spending the last three days mostly sleeping off a good head cold, I caught a little train action. This power has a problem child, the 5530 is making noise, so it is being taken to the service track.

And that eastbound freight sat there a while as I watched this, and I finally got to see why, the track inspector had to clear the block first!

Then, after he cleard, we got a green light and the freight left town. There are quite a few new wheels in this train. And towards the back, a ITRR / NS grain hopper and a DRGW a MILW and other neat old things!

Not Glendive, but neat. I picked up some old books at an auction, and found this 1928 set of books for juveniles called "the Human Interest Library." No set entries on rails, but there is this neat photo of auto's being shipped by flatcar in crates! It goes to show there's nothing new, early container trains! I can't ID the switcher, but am no font of knowledge on Michigan or any of that areas rails.

I believe the sign on the building reads "Studebaker". If so, the photo would have been taken in South Bend, IN. I don't know what railroad(s) served South Bend in 1928, but I'm sure many of you do, with Roger Hensley at the top of the list.

We had 2 I trains in town yesterday! Rare is not the right word for that, but it is extremely rare! So I got two vids, the first is the mainline train westbound to the west end to wait on clearance, while the eastbound sits on 1 track,

Then I had time to go a couple miles west and get setup on this little hill by a bridge to wait,

Watching this video, I began thinking about the NP steam days. Then started wondering what the oldtimers back then might say, were they around to view today's trains, such as this bottom one.

BTW- What is an "I" series train? "S" is/was an intermodal stacker. "P" is/was a premium intermodal. "Z" is/was a priority intermodal. "I" used to be something else. Apparently this has now changed?

That is probably my memory flipping the I in where it should be otherwise! I have no access to any train lists currently, and haven't bothered to hunt around on here for them....

In other, stuff. This train has been sitting on the Circle branch since Sat early or Fri late, a string of newer hoppers that were parked clear up to Lindsay this fall! The early morning light surely makes the reflective tape do it's thing!!
    PIC_0007.JPG

Then a bit later I caught those two Executive MAC's on their way to Sidney as they crossed the Yellowstone.

With an empty yard, I was able to get this series of shots of the yard crew departing after setting out a coal hopper and a grain hopper on the RIP track. Looks like the car knockers truck is waiting to get to work. That truck is usually for wheel change outs. PIC_0012.JPG PIC_0013.JPG PIC_0014.JPG PIC_0015.JPG

A railfan friend of mine got his shot back in May of 2018 and recently shared it with me. It was a hurry up and get there moment, parking the car, get out and quickly scamper up the embankment to get to the bridge as quickly as possible, and here's the shot! Awesome! It's probably the same pair of GP's as in the previous post since they have been here a while. Scamper train.jpg
