I think that Union Station bought the dies for the American Limited cor kits but I have not heard yet if they have started producing them again. The M&R sides are 156mm long. The Kato smooth side cars are 188.5mm so would have to be shortened. I have done that on a few conversions. The old Con Cor smooth side cars are 154.5mm. The roofs would be the tricky part to lengthen but it could be done by using two roofs. The new Con Cor Budd cars are the right length but have corrugated roofs. If you can find them the old ROWA cars are the exact 156mm long.
rick, theyre not 1000, 2000, 3000, or 5000 class. the santa fe type like dirks 1624 was a 1600 class locomotive with twins in the 900 class series. the 5011 was part of the 5001 class texas type 2-10-4s, you have to know the numbering classes to properly call them by their series. the 5000 class was the single madame queen. the tenders were not really class specific as the 3800/3900s, 3751-65 class, 5000, 5001, and so on all shared the same short or long large tenders at different points in time. Thanks again Russell. That is a tremendous help. Yes, Union Station lists the AL core kits but they've been out of stock "forever".
I just thought of another car that could be modified and used for a cor kit. The old Atlas/Rivarossi 10-6 smooth side sleeper is 158mm so would have to be shortened a little.
N scale in the foreground, HO in the background: A N scale close-up of the infamous Santa Fe "90" Erie-Builts: Young and old with good taste in appreciating Santa Fe Warbonnets: This was taken at the Nor-Cal Free-Mo ( http://norcalfreemo.com/ ) Labor Day 2011 meet. Thx, Nor-Cal Free-Mo for having me.
Finally, since I know this thread is about "Santa Fe Passenger Equipment", here's a little bit more about that N scale Santa Fe Big Dome, upleveled from a Bachmann model: You can see more info about recreating this Santa Fe Big Dome N scale model for yourself, here in this downloadable PDF: https://web.archive.org/web/20151002184727 http://home.comcast.net/~atsf_arizona/Modeling_Santa_Fe_Big_Dome_in_N_scale.pdf If you want to know more about recreating a N scale Santa Fe U30CG model as per the pictures in my previous post, using a Minitrix shell on a Kato U30C/C30-7 mechanism... a step-by-step picture documentary is here: https://pbase.com/atsf_arizona/santa_fe_u30cg Happy Holidays, all.
I can't give an 'upvote' to Kirk here, but I can certainly show off one of the tenders - which made my old 'junker Jamco' 3400-class into a 12x12 pickup monster, smooth runner, and no-apologies-needed for the tender upgrade from the 1968 brass original: These were outfitted more like a small Northern than a big Pacific - same 80" drivers, main rods, etc. as their big brothers.
Not the great or the latest, but I like Santa Fe passenger and here is some, from present and last layout, which both were supposed to be parts of Galveston. Switcher assembling "Texas Chief" at Galveston station (mocup of planned DPM Hilltown Hotel kitbash in distant background). Motive power arrives. I have F7ABBA and PA-B but only one PA with MTL couplers when I was making this test run. Leaving the island, passing Island Tower (behind the first coach. Tower is a not-yet-modified AHM "Marysville" tower bought already built off eBay or some such. About right. On the "two mile long" causeway (actually 6 feet long, made up of the upper portions of 7 Atlas viaduct sets, and an old Scherzer rolling lift bridge.) This is on old layout. Sadly I could not fit causeway on new layout and gave this section away. For decades and decades, since middle 1970s, I tried to find something represent a Santa Fe corrugated streamlined diner. Finally Kato made one for their Super Chief set, and I managed to get a "single".
I am fascinated by Santa Fe "California Special" even though it didn't run to Galveston, which my layout represents. I started accumulating possible equipment. Haven't built much of it, except in "Photoshop". I espcially like the mixture of streamlined and heavyweight equipment. My Photoshopped how-to for a partition heavyweight coach from brass-etched car sides and an old (Model Power?) paired-window coach. A Valley series sleeper from brass-etched car sides and an old Concor slumbercoach as a core.
My dad worked for Santa Fe in the signal department. This was before I was born. I like all the above.
Rick, They weren't 1000, 2000, or 3000 clas . The Santa fe broke them down more than that. You had multiple classes numbered in the 3000 numbers like the 3700 class 4-8-2, 3751/3765 4-8-4s, the 3800 class 2-10-2 . Heres some of my scratchbuilt and kitbashed stuff. Drasko
Hi, all, It's been brought to my attention that the previous post of the following, has an accidental error in the URL to the PDF describing this build.
