I am looking for a comfortable operating height for a yard and industrial area on a two level N scale RR. I am 6'2" and have had layouts with yards and industrial areas at 53" or more and was very happy with that. That said it still was not ideal eye level for me. I was thinking 60" for the yard plus industrial area and the rest of the layout would be lower. Scene depth would depend on scenic needs and switching areas would be staggered for that reason.

At 5'3" I think I would have trouble with those.

A friend of mine once told me that your highest benchwork should be at your armpit, minus 2 inches. I am 6’-0” and that works out to 57”. I am going to have a short stretch of my layout plus staging at 62”.

A friend of mine has a whole classification yard set at 65” height on his layout and everyone else who operates there ends up standing on a stool.

My thinking is around the view plus reading car numbers. I like operations and even at 50" I find it annoying leaning sideways to see the N scale car numbers. My old 53" yard was nice when sitting on a stool, but I had to get up and move around so much it amounted to only half the time. I had a 57" switching area on the old layout that sure gave a nice perspective and made tasks easier.

I'll have to build a mock up with my modular set up. Maybe 57" is where to start with the yard.

Well I started at 58". I like it even if sitting on a stool. It was at my 5'7" wife's nose. She didn't care for it.

I set my layout at 43 inches high, just below eye level when I'm sitting in a chair with wheels that roll easy. Actually the chair is an old wheelchair that Cynthia used about five years ago after breaking both feet. She can walk better than I can now and I've never have broken anything. Haha

Mine would be only 48". My last two N scales were 36" but then I had two neighbor girls that enjoyed them as well.
