So next in line for completion is the Shell Station in Black Diamond. This is a JL Innovation kit that was built several months ago and like too many on the RGW, was about 65% complete then just set aside. It must be the superintendent's issue, I'll check into that.

I need to complete the interior first. So I purchased an interior kit from JL. It was a kit with around 10-15 metal fixtures, all of which needed to be painted. I painted them tonight.

So before calling it a night I moved them around to find ideal locations. Off to the right is the waiting area and to the left is the garage.

I scratch built the center island out of 010 styrene. The floor is 020 styrene and the checkerboard floor is a pattern downloaded off Google.

Tomorrow I'll try and finish the waiting area with chairs and a table. I purchased a set of 8 pre - painted gas station attendants, so that will add interest once the structure is finished.

    More soon. M

That KW BLDG build is just fantastic Mike, a great deal of depth in not so much depth. Those KW tractors, you couldn't put enough of them on a 86 or 89' flat to hurt, or overload it. An interesting detail. In my part of the world, there are basically no buildings that you have, unless it is a coal, oil or sand train, it is all bridge traffic.

The Shell station looks great so far. I like how the KW plant turned out too. (y)(y)(y)

A quick status on the Shell Station. I've put in just about all the features I can inside the structure.

There's still tires, rims and another service attendant to go inside, but the tires are not expected to be here until Monday, as such I can't test fit what I have in mind, so that'll have to wait.

One of the "features" of this structure is a sign that says "clean bathrooms". Interestingly enough, the cynic in me says there's no room in the building for a bathroom. So, I scratch built one out of 020 styrene. And true to a 50's style station, the building is outside and you'll need to grab the "key" from an attendant.

On my way in the house I hit the structure with its first coat of primer.

Back at it in a while.

    Addendum:

Started the painting on the new structure.

More tomorrow, or is it today......

    Hi Michael,

That will be a fantastic building to have on the layout. I have a question though. As one who spent his high school years in such an enterprise. Should there be a wall between the work bay and showroom? The old 2 bay station I worked in had a very small showroom. The door to the bay was a swing door but I have seen them with hanging sliding doors to save space. Still, I’d breakdown tires in there any day! Looks great!

    Mike,
You and your crew are a "force" when it comes to a model railroad and buildings.
I always watch your posts. I cant always reply, but I always enjoy you and your crews efforts.
    Please carry on, Sir.

I'm thinking of hanging a swinging gate off the end of the floor cabinet. Your thoughts here convinced me of it. Thx Dale

    Here's where we stand tonight.

There's a lot going on with this little addition. It doubles as a hidden entry for the Woodland Scenics just plug lighting. As such, there are holes in the floor for the wires. The roof will not be glued so we can access the holes and the wires. There is no back to the building. A small entry hole has been drilled in the back of the station. I intend to have the wires pass through styrene ducting (simulating an hvac unit). We'll see how that turns out. Still needs roofing material too.

    Thanks for checking in.

I'm pretty sure you started that Shell station back before I semi-retired-going on a year now. I remember sitting at my desk looking at it on lunch and thinking "That's gonna be cool". I'm not disappointed.
I should also note that the two pump Sunoco station where I hung out back in my high school days, as Dale Baker noted, did have a wall between the showroom and the garage bays. There was a doorway, but I don't recall that there was ever a door. The tire changer was a simple old school "Armstrong" type that would be easy to model.
Also wanted to note that the Kenworth plant turned out to be absolutely excellent and is a perfect use for the space along the backdrop. The use of photos for interiors is something I had not explored prior to seeing it here. It appears to be very effective. Absolutely excellent builds.

Hey Railmix, remember the old split-rim wheels? I hated those! We had to raise the grease rack and then set it down over the rim before we aired it up! I never had one pop but it sure was interesting!

Yeah, I knew a guy that had that happen. He was lucky- didn't get hurt, but from what I heard, it hit the ceiling. Not everything about the good old days was all that good.

You are right about that! We had an old Coats 10 something. It was definitely an arm-strong machine. All we could do with it was break the bead. The rest was with bars. We had 2 islands and 4 pumps!

    end of T/J, sorry Michael!

I changed and repaired many a split rim. Mostly on lumber and logging trucks, as sawmilling was still big in the vicinity of my youth.

In today's mail I received the last items I wanted for the interior, tires and rims. In Adirondack to those items, I added a swinging gate door into the garage bay.

After getting up the courage to glue the building in place, I took it over to one of my Just Plug lighting ports to check the lights. They all work. So it was time to put this baby in place.

It's not permanently affixed yet, as I know I'll have to make adjustments when I add the fuel bay. Plus I have a bunch of "outside" touches to add.

Thanks for all your kind words on this build. M

Put in some time on the fuel bay. I'm rebuilding the kit version in styrene as it just holds up better.

Once the glue dried, a quick test fit. Always feels good when it meets tolerances the very first time.

After this I went in my den and started working on the pumps, including decals. Hopefully they'll be done tomorrow.
