When my dad was working as a civilian contractor for the USAF in Korea in 1956, he picked up modeling HO. He bought a Tenshodo J3a Hudson at the BX. Many years later he had me give it a "Santa Fe" treatment so he could run it on his layout pulling the ATSF Rivarossi heavyweight cars that had picked up. This was the result.

Here you can see the same locomotive on his desk in the BOQ (Quonset Hut) where he lived at the time. His modeling work bench is on the left. img20200417_09185700.jpg

Russell, when I first looked at that engine I knew something was wrong and your explanation makes sense!

    Completed projects this week.

IMWX 1937 AAR Boxcar Kit, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with my last set of Mark Vaughns Wabash Decals. The NJI&I stood for New Jersey, Indiana and Illinois a railroad started by the Singer Sewing Machine Co. to connect the 11 miles between their plant and the Wabash. The name stemed from the locations of the Singer Co. plant locations. Line was eventually sold to the Wabash and also serviced the Studebaker plant in South Bend.

Proto 2000 Greenville Gondola Kit, painted with Scalecoat II Black Paint and lettered with Oddballs Decals. Wondered why a Greenville car had a Pullman Standard Manufactures Plaque on it, but found out PS built the car using Greenville's plans.

Hallmark Wabash Brass Caboose, Painted with Scalecoat Red/Silver/Black paints and lettered with Mark Vaughns Decals. The cabooses were built at the Wabash's Decatur shops or by International Car Corp. and were used by the Wabash, Ann Arbor, Manistique and Lake Superior, and eventually the DT&I.

    Thanks for looking!

It is an impact instruction car serving to illustrate the importance of safe car handling, these cars had a transparent sidewall to show cargo movement, along with force and speed gauges displayed on the side.

Back in October when I went out to Shawmut to chase the Big Boy, I picked up a pair of spikes from the old Sunset Route mainline. They have been sitting on my tool box since.
Today, I decided to put them to a good use while working on the far end of the yard. I took my four foot rule and marked straight lines from one end to another. I then took the old Atlas Mikado with the Dimi Trains Vanderbilt tender, added an inch or so to the length and decided that is how much room I needed at the end of the run around. I put the #6 crossover in place and laid the track to the egde of the layout. I put glue under the flex track, and used the spikes and a can of acetone for weight. Tomorrow I plan to ballast the switches and lay the track between the two sets of crossovers.

The Gandy Dancers from Laguna de los Borrachos worked on the Washington Blvd yard tonight and Rule G was quickly broken.
They got the job done quickly and got the two sets of crossovers connected. They plan to come back in the morning and work on laying track in the yard.

It appears that many who model the Santa Fe model the western side of the Santa Fe system. I would not characterize myself as a Santa Fe modeler, but I have always had an affinity for the Warbonnets.

I believe that this is due to my first train set that I got for Christmas when I was in the second grade was a Tyco Santa Fe set that had a Santa Fe F7 A-B set for power.

I’m a southern modeler and this would include the eastern side of the Santa Fe system and I lived in Texas for 10 years.

The Santa Fe passenger trains that I have chosen to model from the eastern side of the Santa Fe system all either had assigned E units for power or were sometimes powered by E units.

The Santa Fe documents that I have seen call for 6000 horsepower for the Texas Chief with a four unit set of F7’s being first call for power. I have F units but they will be used to power my Super Chief and my El Capitan.

Included in the Argentine K-1 Pool were most of the 80 Class E8m’s. These units were sometimes called on to power the Texas Chief in addition to their other assignments when there were not sufficient F units available.

All of the above is a long winded explanation of why I have chosen to power my representation of the Texas Chief with E units.

I had mentioned a few weeks ago that I planned on upgrading the power for my circa 1963 Texas Chief when I posted this photo of a Kato 176-5304 E8m ATSF 86L and a Kato 176-290 Undecorated E8B.

    Well,

The lead unit is still ATSF 86L, Kato # 106-5304.

    I came across a Kato # 106-2401 B unit shell and repowered it with a Kato # 176-293 chassis.

I also came across a Kato # 106-2402 A unit, ATSF 82L. I know that 82L was wrecked and scrapped in 1959 and wouldn’t have been around in 1963, but well, you know.

I usually run F7s or F3s on my Texas Chief but have been known to hang E8ms or PAs on it occasionally.

But I still run steam on my Ranger.
