I guess I need to get this thread going. Here is an oldie from the very old RailImages. When we upgraded software 14 years ago, all the associated data dissapeared so don't know when I originally posted it. Anyway, our NTRAK club had set up in a very dark venue so had to add extra lighting. Bent some conduit and mounted low voltage "pancake" halogen lights to the end. Turned out kind of cool.

Good morning from partly cloudy and hot Northeast Ohio!

I managed to get some stuff done this week.

Red Caboose 1944 AAR Boxcar Kit, added a plug door from the scrap box along with styrene rod for the additional door rods and A-Line sill steps. Painted with Scalecoat II Armour Yellow, Boxcar Red and Silver paints and lettered with Champ Decals. These cars a XLI (Boxcar, Loader Equipped, Insulated) rebuilds of some old GATC and ACF regular boxcars for use in moving Campbell Soup products out of Napoleon, OH.

Eastern Car Works PRR G26 65' Gondola Kit. Painted with Scalecoat II PRR Freight Car Red and lettered with Champ Decals. The Lehigh Valley (Controlled by the PPR) acquired 50 of the PRR G26 Mill Gons in the late 30's which is why I painted it with PRR Freight Car Color. The Lehigh Valley was one of the railroads that serviced the Bethlehem Steel plants in the Bethlehem and Allentown areas so would need mill gons to transport finished steel products from these areas.

Since I did the DT&I XLI boxcar thought I would show a train with a couple of more XLI boxcars, that is the 8th XLI boxcar I have done for the Campbell's Soup Service that the DT&I handled, they had several hundred XLI and RBL Boxcars in this service.

    Thanks for looking,

    Rick Jesionowski

Someone on the forum had asked about lighting suggestions. I wonder if your club lights might work for them?

The lighting system is 20 year old technology so there may be some cool LED stuff available now. The conduit stalks were standard 1/2 inch electrical conduit cut to length and bent (shown here too short) and then standard coupling fittings and claps. We bolted short sections of aluminum channel on to couplings to clamp onto the top of the back boards, used conduit clamps to secure the bottom ends with screws to the base of the modules and cobbled up some swivel disks to mount the lights at the outer end of the conduit. The transformer modules in the lighting system put out 5 volts AC.

Good stuff this week as always, but I have to comment on Jim's photo. Very nice bridges and an outstanding low angle shot. Back in that day, a cooler wouldn't have been part of the program, but there sure could have been some cold ones sitting in the creek nearby.

Russell, even though I haven't really gotten around to considering it yet, I think you may have solved a layout lighting problem for me. Thanks much for posting.

Social restrictions here have eased to the point where the club can reopen :) First proper run in months!

Regarding lighting, recently a theater tech suggested to me the use of small "par cans" aka stage lights. The idea was that you could use the sharp cutoffs and colour filter options to recreate a more natural light source, a fake sun/s basically, which would lead to more natural looking shadows that simply cannot be achieved with the standard method of bombarding the layout in fluorescent light. I mean look at my picture above, where the shadows are reduced to formless blobs because of all the overhead tubes. Yuck.

Mind that this is all theory at the moment. I want to give it a shot but not before I can visit a showroom to look at things in person.

Yeah, shadows. Love them and hate them. Sharp/crisp shadows are awesome on the ground or the sides of buildings but I find them really distracting on backdrops. Trees, chimneys and water towers are my bug-a-boos.
Well, but then there are clouds. They are defined by shadows. ;)

Module 04 Blue Ice Inc. The ice house is interchangeable with MFA Grain Mill. Both industries are glued to identical bases to make changes easy and it adds variety when operating.
