What are people using these days other than Dullcote to remove the shine from objects?

    Bill,

There is actually nothing wrong with Dullcote, if used properly. It can be a problem, so let me elaborate with some "personal knowledge or you might say a personal screw up".
On my NTRAK refinery module I had painted, weathered some storage tanks and then sprayed with Dullcote. They looked great for several years until I started putting ground cover down. I mixed alky and water and sprayed the dirt before putting down the glue/water mix. What I did not realize was while misting the sand I got some on the tanks. Those mist spots on the tanks and a nearby tank truck turned white. Sort of strange but I oversprayed the area with Windex and the spots disappeared. Not my recommendation just my results.

    Carl

PS: I now use the Krylon Fusion Matte, much more economical purchase.

I use this anomaly as a feature. I spray dullcote on a black roof, then when dried, I mist on rubbing alcohol, then blow a fan across it. The faster it dries, the more white it creates. Look what it did to my roundhouse roof:

That said, you can get rid of the white effect by adding another coat of Dullcote.

I am trying Tamiya what they call flat clear TS-80 and am happy with the results.

To get the spots to go away just reapply Dullcoat. I've used this technique to fade the paint on black hopper cars. Would be interested to know how Krylon and Tamiya react under the same treatment. The effect wasn't even enough for my liking - isopropyl wash on the CSXT, light spray on the GATX.

Has anyone tried Scalecoat II 2051 Flat Clear or 2056 Satin Clear?
If yes, what is your opinion of the Scalecoat II clear lacquer top coat vs. Dull Cote?

I've been trying Tamyia Flat clear with decent results. Only problem is you it is really fine and doesn't like taking chalks from what I found.
