I have come to the conclusion that one builds a layout to the unitrack rather than fit unitrack to an existing layout. That is until seeing his videos especially on custom cutting and making sections into a flex track. The current project on the Turtle Creek would be very difficult without these techniques. 100_0603 by John Moore posted Sep 17, 2020 at 1:01 PM
I don't use Kato Unitrak, but I've lost count of the number of times that I've posted links to this really useful tip from Mike in reply to questions from beginners.
Installing unitrack on an all ready existing layout has been a challenge bit it became easy using two of Mike's videos. The first was the cutting custem length sections and the most useful has been the converting it to a semi flex track. I have even converted some curved sections to a to a semi flex.
9 years ago...when I finally decided to go with Unitrack...Mikes videos...and watching him build his layout are what convinced me. Mike & Robin...and are awesome people!!!
I've reused the same Unitack for several small layouts since '96. I still learn things from Mikes videos. I didn't realize the metal inserts in rail joiners are so easy to remove and solder leads to until I saw Mikes video. I still don't know how to use the Unijoiner tool is meant to be used.
Tabs on the unijoiner tool and gauge are to be locked on the joiner by a simple turn. 100_0626-6 by John Moore posted Sep 20, 2020 at 3:01 PM Once the tabs are locked on a simple rock from side to side and the unijoiner pops out. 100_0625-4 by John Moore posted Sep 20, 2020 at 3:01 PM
Thanks John.. Hm, I've always just rocked track gently side to side separated track, flipped it over and used minature needle nose pliers. The tool looks it won't require removing track section. I should have asked this question months ago.
I've always just grabbed the unijoiner with my fingers...wiggled it while pulling on it...and they come right out....hmmmmmmm.
Mike's videos on Unitrack are the best. Cool info on the Unijoiner tool. May need to get one of those.
