I use 600 to 800 grit BLACK sandpaper, weathered slightly and spray adhered to the area to be placed.... If yellow center lines are desired as well as white burm lines I use Testors gloss yellow for the center lines and Testors flat white for the burm lines and a good stiff 1/8th inch brush to paint them on freehand... For some older part of town or historical districts, I used a product labeled "Enchanted Forest",
a rubber brick road, measures 35" long by 5" that's predominately used for Christmas scenes.
Comes in a roll, clear plastic for about $5.00 in craft shops.

For the streets on my new N scale layout I have been using sheet styrene for the roadway and Evergreen sidewalk for the walkways, with .030x.040 strip styrene for the curbing.

I read an article back in the early 90's (I think by Lou Sassi) of a method of cutting cardboard to an exact fit... applying thin coats of spackling or sheetrock putty, sanding down, and then air brushing. I have used this method and it works... with some drawbacks.

It LOOKS GREAT. Especially in doing the white stripes. You can hit it w/ a coat of white, mask off the stripes using Chartpak strip tape or similar width stuff, then air brush on all kinds "roadsey" looking colors... oil strips down the middle.. yadda, yadda, yadda.

THE DRAWBACK w/ this method is one has to be VERY careful when doing scenery up to the EDGES of the road. ESPECIALLY if you are soaking surrounding areas w/ "wet water" before applying the glue. The cardboard edges are exposed to the gluing of surrounding material.

Water and cardboard do NOT mix... have to protect the edges to pull it off. HOWEVER, it is worth the care cause it makes great roads.

I have used AMI Instant Roadbed. You can cut it easily, shape and paint it. It is sticky though and it may not be right for all locations.

I have used the learning system, great place to start.

    Hi Guys,
I just wanted to say thanks for the help.
I will post a new topic telling what I want to do (but probably won't) this weekend. I will name it "Layout Update 6-20"
