Hey, It's been a long time since I posted last; as usual. Just wanted to show you some pics of the Union Pacific Ogden coaling tower I'm working on. This has been on-going for a while, but think it captures the look of this massively tall coal tower pretty nicely! What you think? I have full build pics if people want I will upload, this is just where I am at, at present. Phil
Thank you! Mostly made out of evergreen and plastruct styrene. Only kit parts are from the IHC Cheyenne coal tower kit, which are the 'feet' and coal-bin. Just working on the hopper unloading shed, got the roof done last night. I have made the sand bin and drying house which are adjacent to the coal tower connected by the sand pipes overhead; this will add a nice bit of detail as these sanding pipes go down over the top of the unloading hut roof alongside access walkways. The window frames are modified Ratio (an English company) brass etchings. Sand drying house and bin: I have a flock to feed off it: 3 big boys, 3 challengers (only one coal), 4 northerns (all oil), mikado, 2-8-8-2, consolidation, pacific. Yeah, painting might be a pain, but I have made it modular so it comes to pieces and that should make it a lot easier! Thanks for the kind words Phil
Challengerphil, The Ogden Coaling tower is a beautiful thing! I am planning to model Ogden but I am not sure that I have room for the Coaling tower. Are you planning to model the depot or flour mills? The Sanborn insurance plans in the UT archives, have nice floor plans. -Tonkphilip
Hi Tonkphilip, I am modelling most of the features in the engine servicing facilities, roundhouse and turntable, coal tower, water and oil tanks, ashpit and crane, powerhouse, sand bin and drying house. The track arrangement in the facility are quite close to prototype, just compressed in length. I have modelled the freight and passenger yard (with the depot which is very loosely close to the Ogden depot (its a German model) I may custom model the depot building one day). The flour mills are such a unique and apparent feature of Ogden. I am going to model the Sperry mill but as a low relief 3d backdrop behind the roundhouse. Are the san born insurance plans online, I'm in the UK! The freight yard is now 2 tracks bigger than in the picture below, but you get the idea! The picture of the service area is also a bit old now, but again you get the idea! Phil
Challengerphil, Yes the Sanborn maps are online. Just type "Sanborn Ogden 1950". For example: https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=322721 This will bring up the Depot, train sheds and Freight station. The first sheet of the set of insurance maps, has a key showing type of building construction, window type, number of building storeys and of course distance to fire hose. Just be careful of track arrangements as that is not the priority in the maps. Enjoy, Tonkphilip
Hi, Got a bit more done last couple of evenings, exposed beam ends on the roofs, the coal unloading shed is nearly done just needs a few more braces. The window frames need adding in the back of the tower. Next are the sand bins front and back. Then coal loading chutes and counter weights etc. The hoppers in the pic are a pretty decent stand in for UP's Hart HK-50 ballast hoppers, these models are MT 2 bays, which UP didn't own any to my knowledge, but they look the part in the middle of a mix-up of other hoppers, Phil
Minor update; The bracing on the outside and inside of the unloading shed is done. Started a new little project; one of the two water towers in the facilities. As can be seen in the previous pictures I had a tichy trains wood water tower. These are the correct diameter, but both the tank itself and the legs are not tall enough. So I have used the leg and tank bases from the tichy kit, made new 'legs and frost box' (got to be careful with some of these descriptions: don't search legs and frosty box on Google!). Then made a new steel tank, which I will scribe, to create panel lines. Then the lattice work between the legs (gosh it gets worse) to finish. Then I have to build another!
Hi The coal tower is nearly complete and ready for paint. Just the sand supply lines to add and possibly the hook loops for the coal chutes. Oh yeah and the counter weights for the chutes.
The coal chutes move up and drop and held by the friction of the hinge pin and the sanding pipes swing back and forth.
