where I am building my first layout since I was a kid (a long time ago but in this galaxy). I am modelling a fictional part of Germany (my other half is German) in n scale. Beset by financial limitations but determined to press on

Hi Colon, welcome. Glad to have you aboard. N Scale is a wise decision. Small enough to create a lovely system, yet remain relatively inexpensive. Please share your creation as you go along, with photos especially.

    Welcome, Colon!
I'm guessing N scale track and locomotives are popular in NZ due to the popularity of NZ120 (TT scale on N scale track). So N scale for a German layout seems like a good choice where you are located, since you might be able to use the track for dual use with NZ trains also if you want.

I'm in the U.S., but I'm slowly working on building a few NZ locomotives and cars just due to my interest in it.
