Paint on that old striped unit is looking as though they got much more than their money's worth of of it.
May 1978 at Knoxville, TN. Coal was moving in unprecedented volume on the L&N and locomotives were in short supply. Sure wish trailing C-628 1408 would have been in the lead!
Hardcoaler, I understand what you're saying, but I wonder if the crew was more thankful to have a fresher, more reliable SD40 leader? I have seen a few CN units, but they're rare in these parts. I see more CSX, NS and UP units running through... I bagged a few from Cheyenne 2003-2006. Here's a few.
Here's the only other CN units I have seen in Minot, until this week: Those pics are still on the camera pending processing...
From about 1975, CN 539717 has been unloaded at Barrington, IL. Stenciling reads "BLT 2-56". I wonder if traditional journal boxes were still permitted in the mid-70s or if those journal lids hide roller bearings?
Both seen in Montgomery, AL are CN 552424 boxcar with plug door and sliding door (07/1989) and a former CN cylindrical covered hopper owned by CANAX Railway Services (04/1993).
As found in Red Hill, SC on 09/10/1995 on the Waccamaw Coast Line Railroad, former CN 9158, an F-7A. CN 9163 trails and B-Unit CN 6622 was there too.
IIRC regarding journal bearings, they were banned from interchange in 1991 for hazmat and in 1994 they were banned from interchange for all ladings.
