Not only does this picure tell a story, but the structure itself is very interesting. The cast concrete storefront on the first floor (a popular type of construction prior to the use of concrete block) was eventually topped by offices and living quarters that appear to have grown as the need did. The faded bail bonds sign conveys the idea that this is not the best neighborhood.
A part of my family came from a steel mill town in Pennsylvania called, Steelton. I try to capture it back in the early fifties. Old on-line newspapers showed an old member of my family that was arrested in a bar fight and his wife was arrested for carrying a concealed deadly weapon. Steel mill towns were rough places to be back then.
Very nice! I don't see any motor vehicles and there appears to be a wooden boxcar at the nearest mill building, so this view is no doubt considerably older than your modeled era. A very good reference nonetheless. Thanks for sharing about your prototype. It gives us a good frame of reference for your modeling.
A GP38, a GP38-2, and a GP40 are handling this military move to the Sierra Army Depot on the old WP line near Susanville, CA. Seen here emerging westbound from the Palisade tunnels. This is a recently (almost) finished part of my home layout.
Switching the Riverbelt line today added decals to this repainted GP35 after adding DCC and sound to this original Kato BN unit Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The D&RGW or maybe it was the SP, seemed to not trust Thermite welding at one time, as there are still kind of crudely insulated bulging type angle bars that was intended to keep the rail aligned but show a track light to the DS if the rail actually did break at or close to the weld. You can still see some to this day out there.
The C-C Great Northern is joining this meet of Northern's. It obviously needs disassembled and some paint added to the inside o the firebox!f
It's a very old postcard picture that was about the time my ancestors would have lived there. And it was on the west side as well. But in newspapers.com I found a story about my relative saving a boy from drowning in the canal when the boy fell through the ice.
My mom used this form of communication well into the 1980's. My mother in law used a cow bell for the same purpose. One of her neighbors used a PA system - though in Gary's defense that was his line of work so he had them laying around.
