Well this is my bench work for now. It's actually an adjustable table with 4 adjustable heights and for the second 2' x 4' layout base when being used. Right now it is being used for organizing, and possibly soon to fix some model kits and build new ones. You can see the Model Power N-Scale house I need to fix the porch on. Me thinks I need one of those hobby mat's that you can cut and measure on. Forget what they are called? But at the moment:
Usually just a "cutting mat" I think. Watch for sales at whatever variety of craft a fabric store is near you. Sent from my moto g(7) play using Tapatalk
Getting ready to install sound on a BR10. This is one of the few n scale fleischmann locos that has room with some modification for a speaker. Normally on their steam with a separate tender the drive/motor is in the tender but their boilers are full of weight and glued so too risky for me to get in there and clear out space for a speaker. This streamlined BR10 has a nice void in the engine so in the shop she goes. Came with incandescent lights so those are the first things to go. Replacing with dual red/white directional and switchable lights. Red will be used when loco ran as a pusher.
Look at what just popped up to the top of my workbench. Long term bash project that is time to get finished. Sort of waiting to check out the new ESU sound decoders. I'll keep you posted as I go through this. Be well, Carl
The Fisker Self Healing Cutting Mats are very useful. I have three of them. 25x19, 17.5x12 and 17.5x6. Steel rulers and exacto knives and when needed a 12x12 paper shears.
Wish me luck. Man these parts are tiny. You know the saying, measure twice, cut once. Well this is dry fit many times before you glue. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh...the 'old plastic cutting board' as a work surface ! I have 3 of these hanging around my workbench. We eat a lot of veggy dinners and those boards 'scar' pretty easy from sharp kitchen knives. They stain bad in those cuts. They are cheap at Wal-mart...so we are buying new ones every couple of months. I get the old ones. BTW...good luck on 'the project' .
And I wrapped it in Wax Paper so when my parts stick to it with glue, when I drop a piece, I can get them loose again. Has worked so far
I would avoid the wax paper wrap. Your typical glue won't stick to the plastic cutting board. And you should be using liquid glue for this anyway. I would worry about inadvertent wax transfer to the parts as they are moved about on the wax paper. If you get wax on the gluing joint/area, it can lead to trouble down the line. Same for flat surfaces when it's time for paint or washes. If you've ever handled wax paper with your hands, it leaves a waxy feeling on your fingers. The wax can easily migrate to your parts.
I agree about the wax paper. I preferred parchment paper. Also in place of the wire cutter I use a toe nail clippers that look similar but are much sharper and a nice chrome finish. Large and small. I started out with model cars. Antiques and Hot Rods.
This weekend, I started working on converting an N scale RS3 into an RS3M, as there is no commercially available RS3M in N scale. The Housatonic RR has an RS3M #9935 (Currently stored out of service). I am attempting to replicate it for my Housatonic layout. These shots show the original shell, my modifications and a reference photo of the #9935. I still need more details, paint and decals. I am happy with the progress so far. I have installed a decoder, but will attempt to add a sound decoder some day, although there is not much room inside for a speaker.
N-Scale Modern Gas Station update. Coming along nicely so far. Walls and windows glued but the rest us just a test fit. I’m amazed so far I only had to fix one thing, reason I was adding just a dab of Tamiya Extra Thin glue. Thank goodness I caught it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
